    able to reach Vettori's level

As a spinner, Vettori was solid, but really didn't run throuhg sides. Ashok could do that - he's unlikely to match Vettori's all round qualities, but as a pure spinner he should go past him.

This is me being optimistic of course

Vettori got every ounce of talent out of himself as a cricketer and I admire him hugely for that.

He got 20 “Michelle’s” which is a pretty damn good return. 2nd most ever behind the immortal Sir Paddles…..I consider getting five wickets in an innings “running through a side” so I think you’re doing him a bit of a disservice with that comment.

He was no Warnie, Murali or Kumble ( of his era ) but he was a very good spinner. I grew to love DV, he would have made most sides squads in the era he played.

So, who are these star spinners that go in if we don't play Santner, Bracewell (still injured) or Phillips?

@canefan Ajaz is in the team above already. So the wicket taking replacement for Santner is....

Would assume Ajaz and Sodhi are the 2 main spinners, as per Pak tour a year ago.

Yes, and they are in the team mentioned. Did you read the thread...?

So who is this other one that is to replace Santner if Nicholls goes in for Ravindra? If we aren't considering batters who can bowl a bit (as @canefan mentions) like Ravindra, Phillips or even the injured M Bracewell, I was asking who were these other dedicated spinners?

Does anyone have knowledge of upcoming spinners on the domestic scene? If it's a choice between trying to blood an up and comer vs rolling out a guy like Santner with little future upside, I'd take a chance on a prospect

Yeah but Santner will probably get in because he’s “experienced”

And with that kind of thinking from management we won't get back to where we were a few years earlier

I missed the Santner chat earlier. Red ball is one thing, but TSF cliches are underplaying his white ball status with "good-ish". CSK are happy to retain him, which isn't the case for all; https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/cricket/black-caps/301015719/five-black-caps-players-released-by-indian-premier-league-franchises-for-2024

Am wondering if Santner is a modern version of a Chris Harris. One of the first picks in a white ball team, just not so much red ball.

We've had many players like that over the years. Gavin Larsen also springs to mind

He did ok in the few tests he played. Like a latter day Ewen Chatfield. Chris Harris’s test figures make for horrific reading.

Andre Adam’s was another. Six wickets in the only test he played is a super effort.

His first class numbers were terrific too, does annoy one remember why he never featured more ?

He often had a knack of fronting in tests. When he wasn't going out with a whimper!

He was the opposite. In an out of the white ball teams for a lot of his career. But was a constant in the test 11 from his debut.

Did very well for a guy whose whole career was a fluke judging from some of the comments on here.

6/41 on debut was crazy though, for a dirty medium pacer.

Is Nicholls playing? He will be under significant pressure to perform, with Ravindra ready and waiting

@nzzp It was playing ok in NZ initially during the buildup. TV3 must have objected since they belatedly bought the rights. Easily fixed, I am now watching from Toronto!
