Labour desperate for some good press try the “ won’t somebody think of the children angle”.
Of course it’s worth remembering this from the last time they were in government Pukekura Horomia fended off questions about kids going to school without breakfast by saying they were deliberately skipping breakfast to stay trim .
Don’t know how anyone can criticise or even be suspicious of this initiative... good on them
I'll criticise it, because the government doesn't know the difference between a strategy and a plan. A strategy won't feed a single person other than the ones who got a sandwich yesterday. A plan is much harder, as it has to actually deliver food to kids.
I've spent the last little while looking for any detail that specifies how they intend to achieve that. That would inform how much it will cost to set up and the every year, the risks, barriers, responsibilities / accountabilities, contractual requirements, success criteria (including measurement) and all the other things that are the difference between having an idea and actually getting something done.
And as usual there's no detail, just a well-meaning idea, like Kiwibuild, that will inevitably fail because they didn't care enough to do some farking work and produce something other than a soundbite. That's the problem with seeing your job as solely starting the conversation rather than, you know, actually doing something.
The worst thing is that there are thousands of really capable people in this country who can actually get shit done, but they'll never be asked, because the last thing an incompetent needs is someone competent showing them up.

Agree entirely, the same criticism can be leveled at past national governments too.
The insinuation that this is just a devious move by a labour government to offset some bad press is what I struggle with.
The business confidence thing is such crap .....
I've seen Zollner speak a few times and heard her say that business confidence always falls when a labour government is elected, and that there is no correlation between business confidence and economic growth.
The simple fact is that a change of goverment promotes uncertainty.

Sending your kids to school without a lunch is child abuse, and the govt just giving the kids lunch is tacitly helping with it.
I would be more impressed if the govt coupled this with bringing charges against parents that consistently do not feed a minor under there care. Instead pathetic govts like this just virtual signal at the taxpayers expense.
If anyone thinks that no lunches is the actual problem.. they are fuckwits. So actually yeah if you actually give give this more than a moments thought, there is a shit load load wrong with this initiative,

It's certainly enabling neglect. But I think the benefits of a safety net helps the kids.
However, like JC, I have no belief that this government will even deliver this.

Minimally, no lunches is a symptom. They make zero effort to even acknowledge the cause.

Maybe business confidence falls under Labour because business know that Labour treat them badly.
This govt is terrible for business. I have delayed the hire of 2 people, simply because of the min wage increases and the uncertainty they bring.
Anyone whothinks that a proposed $20 minimum wage is not going to have a major effect on business, inflation and unemployment needs a good think. -

Completely agree. But covering some of the symptoms helps the kids
With a competent government theyd be treating the cause.

There is not one single parent in this country that cannot afford to feed their kids.
Not one.
Is their any parent here that can think of anything they would rather spend money on than feeding their children basic food requirements? -

We can't call out the negligent parents, that would hurt their feelings!

kids having no lunch is just one of a raft of problems these days.
There are other charitable organisations that work with and in schools all over NZ (Graham Dingle Foundation) with great results, the Govt should be working closer with these kinds of organisations to make a positive change.
@canefan I guess I am just being optimistic that this was something that wasnt just done in a few days, and they have been working on the framework for some time.

I agree, if the government tries to organize it they are poorly equipped to do it. Hell they can't even build a few homes ffs!!! I could see contracts being awarded to all sorts of dodgy characters who don't provide a decent product, and in the end the kids will lose. Maybe the government should do a deal with a supermarket or even individual companies to supply the raw materials to each underprivileged school and it is up the them to make it into lunches? Might be a community building exercise as well. The children who go foodless at higher decile schools are unfortunately the losers in a scheme, but I don't see any way cater for each individual child based on their need

Your point about not hiring 2 people is anecdotal... our firm has hired 3 new staff this month and as an accountant/ business advisor I’ve had 3 meetings this week with small businesses who are expanding and looking to hire staff (also anecdotal).

You are right it is anecdotal.
But what are your thoughts on the effect of wage inflation? Do you think raising the minimum wage nearly 20% in 3 years would cause wage inflation? Do you think wage inflation will create general inflation pressure? Do you accept the link between the 2? Who is most effected by inflation?
My answers are Yes, Yes, Yes and the poor. So that why massive wage increases are a bad idea for the economy. -

Is that what Zollner said? I thought she said the negativity may be more to do with global uncertainty than domestic sentiment, which is probably the case. But I don't think she said there was no correlation between business confidence and economic growth because numerous economic studies have shown otherwise.

This always happens in these politics threads, you support one decision by Labour to help one area of society and everyone assumes that you are some kind of militant socialist and support all their policies. It's why I generally stay clear.
I voted for John Key 3 time (although his behaviour at the ANZ now has me questioning his integrity somewhat)
I don't support the minimum wage increase.
I disagree with measuring business confidence as proof of anything.
I'm OK with some of my tax dollars going to help hungry kids (although I agree there are better ways to do this) -
