Hard for a party which believes in a steady state economy (as in, perpetual growth is not possible and should end sooner rather than later given environmental issues) to go into a coalition with a party with opposing views on that topic.
like NZF?
I know that, but both Labour and NZF have similar views on the economy to National. In terms of negative Green outcomes, would the government really have been any different with National there? Arguably you could drive far harder bargains from inside the tent.
I completely understand that ideology precludes that coalition, but I am pointing out the upside that it could have had.

Which is why they shouldn't be called the Greens, but the Communist party. A true Green party would work with either side to temper both to improve their environmental policies and up their priority.
Instead they hide under a PR blanket and get morons voting for them.

Something like this. They would get so much more done leveraging Labour off National

It's not inconceivable for steady state economy to harmonise with environmental issues. Some adjustment, yes, but it is achievable without everybody going broke as well. I don't think the Nats are anti environment, just not at all cost. They need to up their environmental policies to reflect that and get more centrist votes.

James Shaw seems like the kind of guy who could work both sides. Marama on the other hand...
-
@canefan Shaw did a good job of gaining cross party consensus for his Zero Carbon Bill (ironically) working with Todd Miller.
Seems the Greens strategy is to have a dull grey guy quietly achieving stuff for the environmental wing and a loud strident, anything but dull woman screeching their social policy position but getting fuck all done

Sound decision I think. Reality is that Auckland probably down to L2 in another week or so, and can campaign after that. Lets Parliament hold Government to account (such as it is).
I can't stand him, and Peters is an untrustworthy muppet, but by god he's a master at this game. Arguably Ardern didn't want to delay (timing of announcement prevents rural MP travelling easily for Tuesday parliament), but he forced her hand with the open letter. When he's on, he is a master manipulator of people.
Actually he's even more cunning than that. He doesn't have to force anything, he just has to read the way the wind is blowing then jump that way. Then he gets to say to his base that he was the person who made it happen and seems like the master manipulator. He's the fucking Wizard of Oz.

His base have mostly died haven't they? One more good outbreak of Covid and he's pretty much only got his own vote.
Base also means this:
" lacking or indicating the lack of higher qualities of mind or spirit "Appropriate.

I dunno, the pool of arseholes seems to be self-replenishing.

It has got him through in the past. Maybe wishful thinking that they were all dead. I suppose he still has the racing and fishing "industries".
A self replenishing pool of arseholes. Fuck. I'm building a pool and don't want that image again.

Didn’t realise the NZ PM played Barbara Jean in Nashville.

Who among us can honestly say we have never harbored the desire to press our breast against David Seymour and inhale his manly scent

I'm a bit concerned if that sprung to mind rapidly
Brilliant though
