I agree Sammy. NZ doesn't suffer the extremes of idealism that other countries, such as the US do right now. Look at the Fern, there are a range of view points but for the most part we all conduct ourselves with a degree of mutual respect (most of the time ). This was a commercial decision from Whitcoulls. It is one thing for a private business to make a decision like this, and they are well within their rights to do so. It is another thing entirely if a civil organisation banned the book. No civil rights or freedom of speech have been trampled here
I don’t agree. This whole episode proves NZ is no different to anywhere else.
Smaller population just means smaller number of voices.

I think it's a fundamental problem with the culture when people don't stand up for liberal principles.
Instead too many seem to care about what 'side' someone is on before applying principles..That is not a bad idea - someone should write a book with some principals like these to consider living your life by. You wouldn't need many, ten or so should do the trick.
Could be a best seller.

I respect your right to disagree mate

Sounds a bit boring?
Won’t most of them be common sense anyway?
-
Jeez it makes me laugh all you guys saying it is boring and obvious. You lot must really have your life together and everyone you know must have their life together, all the suicide rates among young men, the drop out rates and depression rates among young men must not exist in your circles.
All the lives that have been changed for the better dont matter?
According to you lot people shouldnt try to give some guidance to those who might need it or enjoy it because it is common sense guidance? FFS.Pompous jackasses. You just care about throwing shade. Get over yourselves.

@SammyC said in Censorship and the Mosque Shooting:
I understand the issue you guys have, I just don’t think the division is as great as you are making out. There’s extreme ideas on both sides but I think the majority of society is pretty ambivalent to this kind of stuff.
There are extremes on both end. But one extreme is getting the results and getting their way. Neither extremes should.

@Baron-Silas-Greenback whoosh much?

No. Unless you think I amn referring to the post from @roatated which I thought was funny and liked?>
In which whoosh right back at ya... -
Multiple tongue in cheek comments re JP's work, although @rotated's was the best, and first.
You were the one coming in hot and throwing your own shade. So how about you get over yourself?

So you did think that Rotated posts was one of the ones I was referring to? You are wrong.
You should be more careful before assuming others dont know what they are reacting to. -
@Baron-Silas-Greenback I can't work out if you're trolling or if you have a genuine problem with people holding opinions different to your own?

He can be a bit blunt, but he has a point. Those saying it doesn't matter, and is a boring book, aren't taking into account the thousands of people that the book has helped.
Some of those are from the far right side of identity politics, and have left that behind them and responded to his calls for personal responsibility. Isn't that what we want? An antidote to the type of thinking that leads to violence?

I have a genuine problem with lame brained and facile criticism of a book like that. If people want to debate the actual points he makes in the book, so be it. But just calling it boring and obvious, isn't doing anything except throwing shade based on political bent.
I have seen the good it has done, and I think it is a massive net positive for society when young men take responsibility for their lives. Sure to some people it may be obvious, but if you know many young people nowdays.. not many take personal responsibility and even worse very few are shown guidance in how to do it.
So yeah @Toddy I do have a problem with it actually, I didnt get much out of the book, because I am lucky enough to have had parents who encouraged me to get my shit together at a young age, and I haven't been hit by a mental illness. Peterson's book is inherently positive about self control and self responsibility. Speaks volumes that you think I am the one trolling when I think those throwing shade are the ones either trolling or are intellectually weak on the topic -
@Toddy said in Censorship and the Mosque Shooting:
But a book being boring is a personal opinion of that book. Should we discard/change that opinion to suit others?
For the record I found the book boring and stopped after the first chapter. I will revisit it again some time this year.
No, but we shouldn't use it as a justification/excude to ban the book either.

You can have that opinion, and I can think it is facile reason to criticize it. But I am not aware you did that?

I was enjoying the balanced discussion before you jumped in all aggressive. Rembrandt and Duluth both made good points and got likes from me without resorting to insulting those with a different opinion.
Only one pompous jackass in here
