Yep and absolutely fuck ALL of that sort of shit. I was looking up all the comments about what happened to John Edward Jones and there were arguments from both sides. Obviously there was the whole angle of how it achieves nothing except getting search and rescue to have to rescue you, he shouldn’t have done it as a husband and father……vs the thrillseekers who go on about how amazing it is.

I can understand people who like to rock climb, skydive, ride fast dirt bikes etc but this just seems like such a weird ‘thrill’ to me. Crawling in extreme discomfort to get to……..a dark cave ????

    I’ll never get it.

Being upside down for your final moments ( stretched over 27-28 hours ) must have been absolute agony.

I did it once. 8 hours underground ending in a belly crawl through some running water called "The horrid place" (written in mud above the 'entrance'. Nothing tops that feeling when you finally get out but I'll be fucked if I ever do that again.

    Once more than me fella……

Easy to see how the roof of the passage would have made extracting him basically impossible even if he was in a position to help by pushing himself out ( which he wasn’t )

It’s really chilling that he apparently admitted defeat to his rescuers who he was communicating with and realised he was stuck and was going to die there.

@Rembrandt Yeah - fuck ALL that noise.
The closest I got was maybe an hour or two in the silver mines of Potosi - a few places where it was a belly crawl, and being told how the mountain was riddled with these tunnels, collapses all too possible.
I reckon with the beer-belly I've since caught (it's viral, right? Not my own fault?) - I don't reckon I could do it again even if I wanted to.

Personally speaking I think my big broad shoulders would be an issue too 😉

Not sure how much if any you guys have read about the specifics of what actually happened but sounds like he was wedged so tight it interfered with his breathing ( along with being upside down for that long )

    Horrific.

Many years ago (before my upper body mass slipped down to the middle) I went caving in the Jenolan Caves. There was a passage you had to squeeze one shoulder through at a time and the only way to progress was grabbing a nub of a stalagmite and pulling myself through. For a brief period I honestly thought I was stuck.

I don't get claustrophobic, but that experience was enough that I didn't pursue it as a hobby.

I'm not ashamed to admit I'm an absolute pussy when it comes to this sort of stuff ( and heights ). But then shit that might scare other people for example walking in town past a big bunch of potential thugs doesn't really bother me in the slightest provided I'm alert and wary. We're all different.

The thought of being stuck even if only for a brief period is nightmare stuff for me. It would take all I could manage just to cope, be calm and wait to be rescued.

Being in that predicament knowing I was fucked and no one could save me is too horrifying to even think about.

Agreed. I've given it some thought over the years looking at battles like Calais for 30th Infantry Brigade in WW2.

Or the physical and mental tenacity to go over the top in WW1.

Yeah but at least in the situations you mention a quick death is a likely scenario. It would be your life slowly ebbing away that would be considerably worse.

I ain't reading or clicking into shit.
Just what I've seen/read here - has given me the justification to wander down to the nearest brewery and wipe it from memory.
One of my occasionally recurring nightmares is exactly this - getting stuck in a tight space. I'm doing all I can to avoid triggering that again. And if that involves an imperial shit-ton of craft beer, and some medical marijuana, so be it.

Yeah even if by some miracle they did save this guy he would have been severely traumatised by what he went through.

I went through a couple of caves as a kid, you could mainly walk through them, and one place you had to crawl in water. There are quite a few caves in the limestone country south and west of Port Waikato.

Apparently this sort of stuff happens quite frequently with an average age of 47 bing reported. Thank fuck I'm a older ferner.

A young American man needed to take an embarrassing trip to A&E after a shocking sexual experiment involving a USB cable when horribly wrong.
