Not sure if Stuff even remembers what hard news is anymore. It's all opinion columns from people with more ego than sense.

This sort of stuff shows that we have more information than ever today, but less of it is useful than ever before

Decent article from the spinoff I thought ...

The conviction of teenager Losi Filipo is nothing to celebrate

Congratulations, New Zealand. The court of public opinion has outdone any mere judge, delivering a punishment that reeks of knee-jerk outrage and lazy prejudice, writes Madeleine Chapman.

Couldn't agree more with that writeup, exactly what I was arguing from the get go. But I'm sure the morally outraged are all patting themselves on the back following his conviction. The WRU and the Police were weak as piss on this which is bloody disappointing. For once I'd love an organisation to say "you know what, a bunch of assholes screaming as loud as they can on social media doesn't necessarily represent the population at large, so get fucked, we're standing by our original decisions (in this case not to tear up his contract and not to appeal the decision).

The permanently outraged and offended can get fucked.

@No-Quarter To be fair they may actually represent the population. But they don't represent the population who actually know all the facts and were present in the hearing. That is much more finite, and frankly, all that really matters.

@MajorRage yeah for sure, but I actually think they often don't represent the population. Twitter, Facebook etc are bloody political and are quick to ban people that hold a different opinion to the morally outraged, so most people won't even bother trying to put a different perspective on it. The morally outraged also go crazy if someone disagrees with them and does everything in their power to identify that person and have their livelihood destroyed.

Agree 100% about the people with the facts being the only people that matter. Why can't we trust the experts? Why is everything a fucking conspiracy?

As an example of what I'm talking about, the media discovered and reported that the headmaster of St Pats Silverstream wrote a character reference for Losi Filipo. A fucking character reference, which is not in any way condoning what he did, but writing a letter that outlines his dealings with Losi which helps to give the judge some idea about what kind of person he is, and whether what he did was out of character. Which helps with the sentencing. Which is 100% standard in just about any case like this.

The morally outraged went crazy and called for him to lose his fucking job and MSM gave them a nice loud voice, after which he tried to retract the character reference to get them off his back.

Instead of him trying to retract his statement, I think St Pats as an organisation should have come out and told those idiots to get fucked. And perhaps explained what a character reference actually is.

but that would require people to listen to learn a bit....

Here's an interesting article. Ok, it's not. It's awful. But I felt the need to post it somewhere purely for this line:

"We humans like power and that's precisely what meat stands for. It stands for wealth, for masculinity and for power over the poor and over nature."

    Paula Goodyer  /  Nov 4, 2016  /  Health & wellness

Why we can't afford our addiction to meat

Why we can't afford our addiction to meat

When meat companies buy into veggie burgers you know things are changing. Tyson, the largest meat processor in the US is investing in Beyond Meat, a company that creates burgers not from beef, but plants the New York Times reported in October.

@mariner4life You think you love it because of the taste. But actually it's because it makes you feel wealthy, masculine and powerful over the poor and nature.

    Right?

@MajorRage I tend to feel poor after buying a rib eye, but hey, it does make me feel masculine, especially after cooking it on an open fire with a beer in one hand!
