I couldn't believe it when I read it was centred in the SI. I'm central NI and my whole house was shuddering and creaking for a full minute.

Hope everyone down Ta$man/Chch way are ok.

Kaikoura getting fairly large amplitude waves. Check the 1m scale on the bottom right.

    Reports of "earthquake lights".

    Interesting and controversial phenomenon:

Video apparently from this morning as below

We're fine here in Christchurch - didn't have to evacuate, fortunately. Looks like Hanmer Springs, Culverden, Cheviot and Kaikoura took the brunt of it.

The numbers bounce around until they get filters on the stations and do a bit of work. Magnitudes are bloody hard to define accurately .

i went outside during the shaking, and there were lights in the sky in the north island at the time. looked like lightning to me, not that i was paying particularly close attention - more checking geonet to see how far away it was - then saw south island and thought oh fuck... looks like we got off bloody lightly given the strength of it.

It was pretty gnarly but kind of smooth rather than the really jerky/jarring quakes we sometimes get. Super strong though and it lasted for too long! Folks are out in Paekak and strong quakes on sand will give you motion sickness! neighbour almost wore a tsunami from Dad's pool!
