Go well Smithy, what an amazing coach and fine human being. His contribution to the ABs has been immense. Hope he enjoys keeping his hand in with a bit of coach coaching, but he must be excited about more time with family.

Probably the most influential person in NZ rugby over the past 20 years on the field (arguably Hobbs more important in general).
As Tew pointed out today he pretty much built the Crusaders dynasty from the gutter, was a key coach under both Henry and Hansen and most importantly his ability to humble himself (for lack of a better word) and come back as an assistant without any whiff of bitterness or naked ambition after being the head coach was the key part of the cultural shift that happened under Henry. Rejected big money, team was always first and gave everything his all. Makes it a lot easier to preach sacrifice to the playing group.
Don't think Henry gets a second stab if Smith isn't on the ticket coming back in 2008. Hansen was viewed as the weak link and the pitchforks were out for Ted.
In terms of a replacement Nigel Yalden threw up the following names as suggestions Alistair Rogers (former video analyst, current Blues coach) - surely too soon & Boyd and/or Plumtree - reasonable candidates.
My initial feeling after listening to the press conference was that there is a strong overseas candidate they believe will apply, very clearly stating they are waiving the previous provision that you have to be NZ based for these types of roles.
Pretty obvious candidate for me that hasn't been mentioned. That former Canterbury coach working in Japan seems like he would be and ideal candidate if he wanted to return to NZ. Clear ties going back with the Hansen, Tew, Shand infrastructure too.
Unless he goes off the board and out of NZ with someone like White (who is just starting a gig) or his mate Meyer (unemployed) I don't see any other strong candidate with a strong enough candidate who doesn't have compelling employment elsewhere.

but given the history between Robbie and Hansen/Tew I'd be kind of suprised if it happened.(or maybe I read that wrong and you're talking about Rob Penny)

but given the history between Robbie and Hansen/Tew I'd be kind of suprised if it happened.(or maybe I read that wrong and you're talking about Rob Penny)
Meant Penney but tried to make it read Deans. He did everything he was able to do in NZ including the U20s, had adequate if unspectacular results at Munster, similar results in Japan (useful for RWC planning perhaps)? Always impressed me.
Don't know too much about his relationship with Hansen (perhaps my enemies enemy is my friend) but he surely had a bunch to do with Tew back when he was at Malborough and Super Rugby was getting going.
No chance with Deans, pretty much everything Wayne Smith is being lauded for Dingo has been the complete opposite.

A replacement from within NZ would likely be one of the current defence coaches at the 5 franchises. From Hansen's comments the role will be more specific than what Smith is currently doing.
At the Chiefs that is Andrew Strawbridge. Who fills that role at the other 4 teams?

Each franchise is different the Crusaders have a backs/forwards coach pretty sure Razor overseas the defence. (not unlike the Henry/Hansen/Smith division for most of their tenure).

Haven't heard the press conference, but if this is the case - and assuming it won't be someone trading an international head coach job for an assistant's role with the ABs (ruling out Gatland, Schmidt and Joseph) then the most likely candidate might be Vern Cotter - assuming he's got an out clause in his club coaching contract?
Otherwise I'm struggling to think of an overseas NZer that I'd describe as a strong candidate.

The same Penney who left NZ because he didn't feel like he was even in the running for Super head coach jobs? Whatever his relationship with Tew is, it can't be helping him that much.
Fuck it annoys me that good coaches like Penney and Keane have to go overseas to look for promotions, while Mark Hammett's about to be head coach of his second Super team.
