@mn5 yep, I think you kill someone while under the influence you should eb charged with as close to murder as they can.
And being banned from driving for 2 years, FFS, should be banned for life after 2 drink driving convictions...but given his disregard for the law, he'd drive anyway.
Was listening to talk back, apparently he had the option to reduce his sentence by attending AA classes and refused. He got ten years and served the lot cos he's clearly a stubborn fuck.

Whatever his tipple of choice, someone fills a barrel and drowns him in it.
(Honestly, I cannot even fathom how this guy with four deaths and multiple offences to his name has still even had a license to lose let alone be suspended. And it shouldn't be a choice of alcohol rehabilitation, but a long, long stay in a secure facility.)

@taniwharugby @Mokey @MN5 its all of our fault apparently

@jegga in part I think there is some truth in that, the soft approach to his convictions, even being allowed to drive at all, but at the end of the day, if someone doesn't think they have a problem or want help then no amount of help provided will matter.

Yeah, definitely give him more chances. He might still learn.

Yep - wasn't he offered a reduced sentence if he attended AA or similar, but preferred "yeah, ... nah" ?
That's pretty much the "System" offering the "help" that article presumably suggests (didn't read it, been drinking, oh the irony)... and him refusing it. -

@jegga Grrrr. Articles like that piss me off. The only person responsible for an addict's behaviour is the addict. No system is perfect, we know that, but if an addict refuses help, or doesn't actually want to change, then it is doomed to fail. That is not the system's fault. And if fucking KILLING people wasn't this guy's rock bottom, then he has other serious issues than just being a drunk.

I'm all for rehab and counselling in some cases and part of me does feel for people with genuine problems but that sympathy goes out the fucken window when fluffybunnies like this effect and kill others with their actions.

He doesn't want to be redeemed. First chance he gets he will drive again. The best we can hope for is that he kills himself and doesn't take anyone with him

I know so my post is actually pretty generous as far as a guy like him is concerned.

I don't know what he is being charged with but considering that he is well aware what he is doing will probably cause someone harm it should be at least manslaughter and come with a stiff sentence

Well exactly. If I killed anyone drink driving I'm fairly sure the remorse would be with me my whole life and I'd never touch another drop.....
.....and I LOVE a drink .

@mn5 Yeah, that's often the worst thing about these stories. The big hearted grandma who got killed by the drunk. The little kid who got beat to a pulp by the meth head. The business owner who went into receivership cos they got defrauded by a gambler employee. These addicts don't give a shit about the carnage they cause, either.

So why should we care about them? The irredeemable ones need to be put down, they don't deserve better

He is certainly that ... from the two linked media pieces:
*"in 1989 when his drink-driving cost three people their lives after a head-on collision. ... two-year prison sentence, when Hawthorn was 26, clearly had little impact on his behaviour over the next 14 years. By 1995, when he was sentenced on his seventh drink-drive charge, he had more than 30 convictions, 24 for driving offences. He had been in jail five times.
... 12 drink-driving convictions plus others for driving while disqualified and dangerous driving. Then there's his off-road pursuits: burglary, theft, violence and drug convictions."*
This palooka would be wearing these statistics like badges of honour. They are the only thing that has drawn attention to him throughout his useless life.
He is fortunate to have been born in New Zealand and not any one of the South East Asian countries I know - he'd be living at the local tip there, scrounging for scraps of food, kicked back to the kerb by the local police if he strayed too far from home, and by the nearby local residents who are left to exercise their own judgement and to administer their own sanctions because they have neither the money nor the time to waste on non contributors.

@mn5 maybe he could go hang out with your old mate Veechie and rehab himself outside of NZ and see how long he lasts.
Veechie is several rungs up the chain on this fuckstick.....
