Movie review thread...

I just watched the trailer for Captain Marvel. What a fucking mess of a trailer. I have no idea what that movie is about except a reasonably hot chick came from somewhere, doesn't remember it, and fights someone? Is there a bad guy?
Is this movie just a rushed in job to fill us in on who is supposed to save everyone in the next Avengers movie?
Speaking of that, why am i watching Spiderman in a trailer before he's come back in the Avengers?
Did Marvel get too big?
(yes, i will totally go to the cinema and watch all of those movies, contributing to Marvel making all of the money this year. All of it)
-
@mariner4life That's the best type of trailer in my opinion - I actively avoid them because so many give the whole plot away.
Marvel - tick, Brie Larson - tick, thats enough for me, I don't need a trailer to convince me to watch it.

Polar. A film about a top assassin that is nearing retirement and his employers turn on him. Mads Mikkelson, who I think is a decent actor, Lagertha and bizarrely Matt Lucas. You have to give credit to the Director and producers for making a film that has a pretty good cast, is about assassins, has lost of violence and gun play into a steaming pile of shite. It took some doing but they managed it.
2 Danish hitmen out of 5 stupid endings.

@Catogrande damn...oh well I'll still watch it, cos Lagertha.

A sound enough reason. A small consolation is that Mads gets to rough shag some skank bird.

I found it alright, if a bit of a mish-mash.
Coming from a comic book - it was a weird mixture of Scott Pilgrim graphics/style, John Wick violence/revenge, Leon: The Professional emotional attachment... then suddenly changing for the last 30 minutes or so into removing all those things.
I would watch the sequel it so obviously set up. -

Ah - yes, just went back and realised what you're on about... yeah...
And reminded me of my initial thoughts on the first 30 minutes... Mikkelson's Belarus shag had some lovely lady-bumps/shirt-potatoes/blouse-bouncies -

“tits” ? I'm unfamiliar with the term.
(And, more honestly, the actual items in question, for some time)

Alita Battle Angel: A James Cameron produced and Robert Rodriguez directed manga based movie about a female cyborg killing machine with large eyes. The main character and others are motion captured but it's a live action film.
Better than I thought it would be for a movie long in development and needing to establish its world. I thought it was much better than Mortal Engines in that it's characters and performances were actually interesting.
The big issue with it as a movie is that it's a sequel set-up so hopefully it makes some ok money.
This was the 3rd movie I've ever seen in 3D and it was filmed in 3D. I just don't get it, there was nothing in the 3D that I thought helped the movie.
The cast includes Christophe Waltz, Mahershala "in everything now" Ali, the bad guy from Dead Pool and Jennifer Connelly.
3.3 splattered dogs out 5 creepy human-cyborg hookups.

3.3 splattered dogs out 5 creepy human-cyborg hookups. My takeaway thought from that was... re-watch Azumi and/or Battle Royale instead.

I haven't seen Azumi and it wasn't really like Battle Royale IMHO (I'm not a huge manga/magna style films fan so am only rating it purely as a filmatic experience).

Yeah - my thought process was completely facile, in that it was based on the title, and vaguely "everything from Japan is the same".
Edit: and that I just really wanted an excuse to re-watch Azumi and/or Battle Royale.
Edit 2: which leads me to, in my insomniac state, starting to watch Battle Royale 2... opening with a scene of rugby... not the best choice. "I peed my pants. I peed it all" -

I watched the first 30 mins of Bram Stoker's Dracula last night. That is some weird trippy shit. You have Gary Oldman acting his heart out and then there is...Keanu. With perhaps one of the worst English accents on screen.
I love that flick. Must see it again sometime. Keanus acting was actually pretty good in that I thought but then everyone will look amateurish next to Gary Oldman.

A Star Is Born
The short version is that this film is a love story following a tried and tested method.
But something about it is really enjoyable. Cooper is outstanding, although I got a bit bored of is slow drunk southern american drawl ... we ended up having to turn the subwoofer off at home for the Cooper / Sam Elliot scenes ... fair dues to him though as it turns out it was him actually singing. Lady Gaga isn't eye candy at all, but she's fucking talented.
4.5 stars out of 5 borns.

Doomsday (2008)
A virus infects the populace. Scotland is cut off from the UK with a modern version of Hadrian's Wall. 30 years later the virus appears in London and survivors are spotted wandering around in Glasgow. Your heroine is sent off to get the vaccine.
Think Escape from New York, 28 Weeks Later and Mad Max. Not a lot of originality in the script.

Is that the one where the heroine has some weird hi-tech fake eye?
I seem to recall watching it - thinking it wasn't so much a new film, but effectively an extended homage to exactly the 3 films you mention, plus a few more.
