Specifically a Gallardo Spyder, used, 2007-2009 model with 20k-50k miles on the clock. Am aware the service costs will be eye-watering. Any petrolheads here got some advice on these?

If you can afford it then do it. It won’t be long till you won’t be able to own anything like this so don’t put it off and miss your window. The later models were really reliable for a supercar. Use a lot of oil though, like most high perf cars, and some of the engines are really particular on what brand you must use.

Two bits of advice.

If that’s what you want, do it. But pay up and buy from a dealer, not private. See what warranty and servicing you can get. It will cost a lot to run, but so what!!!

If you are open to others, test drive them all. If I had a dollar for every prospective lambo owner who had bought an r8 or 911 instead after driving, I’d have two dollars. Word is that although they are stunning to look at, price wise there are better drives.

Thanks @MajorRage and @JC. I'm planning on paying cash, from a dealer, so thinking of going near quarter end on a Friday to try and haggle price down. Probably in September, as apparently convertibles trade cheaper going into winter (and SUVs higher, with the opposite occurring in Spring?).
I've also heard they're reliable for a supercar as a lot of the platform is shared with the Audi R8. My neighbour is a bit of a car nut: has a Ferrari 488 Spider, two Telsa Model S P100Ds, a Lamborghini Galladro Coupe about the same age as the ones I'm looking at, and an Aston DB9. I've driven the Lambo and it's the one I prefer, was thinking of getting a Telsa prior to that, but I'm now converted (sorry @NTA).
Basically my thinking is, if you're going to spend money on a "silly" car, make sure it is properly silly. Hence a convertible Lambo, probably in yellow or orange. Needles to say my fiancee, who loves Astons, is not that impressed..

Mate if she's that picky, maybe she is a bit too high maintenance. Have you considered what sort of upgrade you could afford on the car if you dumped her? Just a thought.

ATM I've got a project car (which if I'm honest isn't progressing) to put a M157 into a W114 coupe. Perfect Sunday car.

That certainly is a dilemma. I really hope you guys get through this. Those kind of differences can kill a relationship.

@antipodean if I have a criticism, BMWs colour range is quite poor. Black, white, a couple of greys and a couple of blues, one of which is weird. You can’t actually buy that silver colour in the UK now. Very few of the colours do much for the lines of the car to be honest.

Going through my own midlife crisis, when we had problems with our previous car late last year, the wife let me chose what I wanted this time and gave me a decent budget so ended up with a 2017 Mercedes Benz GLA 45 AMG with just under 13,000 kms on the odometer. Got it just at the budget so the wife was happy about that.
And fark me, yes it's a bit wanky but I love this car. It is one of those strange crossovers or SAV's (great term, hadn't heard that before) and you kind of ask yourself is it a hatch or a small SUV because it isn't that big but damn it can move. It sits in the same family as the AMG A 45 and CLA 45 but isn't as uncomfortable as the A 45 hatchback or as strange looking as the CLA 45.
Performance wise, 280kW of power and 475Nm of torque and can do 0-100km/h in 4.4 seconds.
Ahhh, now where did I put that box of tissues, need to clean up this mess.

Yeah, it's true. Since Bangle left they have designed their larger cars to look a lot more understated, and the colour schemes go with that. I'm ok with that, as I think it gives them a bit more of a premium look. We have a dark grey X5 with black wheels and I think it looks awesome.
@RoninWC that is a serious piece of kit, well purchased! I'm still not a fan of MB myself, but that is a mean looking cross over!
I looked at an M3 earlier this year - I've never owned one and it's always been something which I think has been missing. However, the current generation is at the end of the line and I just didn't feel like it felt it was worth the cost. The interior, design, switchgear felt quite old and moving across to the X5 felt like a real step up. On the road though, wow. The overtaking acceleration was insane. Going along at about 65 mph, and pull out to pass, though may have gone up to 80mph and was nudging 100! It would be the end of my license.
