I learnt something new just a few moments ago.

Auckland is the most populous region in NZ but what is the second? I was slightly surprised to read it is Canterbury.

I thought the Wellington Region would have had more people with the Kapiti coast etc included

Might have been pre-game, but Yankee fans are bailing on the team like the front-runnin' pieces of garbage they are.

Last night was another fine example. All season the Yankees were old and injured, and yet overachieved and won more games than any experts predicted. They made the wildcard playoff spot, a one-game knockout against Houston. That game was played last night, at home in Yankee Stadium. Bottom of the 8th-inning - - Yankees trailing 3-0 - - still an inning to go and not an insurmountable lead. You might have expected that Yankee "supporters" might be encouraging their boys for the comeback rally, but instead were raining hard boos down on their players and manager.

I learned that TALKING IN CAPS and using a lot of !!!!!!!!! renders rigorous scientific discourse obsolete and that an argument is always won by the person who first manages to get corporate greed, imbecile, denyers (not deniers which is a reference to hosiery), [insert hobbyhorse]-gate, naïve and pseudo-science into one sentence.

On the weekend, I learned that an electric planer is NOT the tool you should use to try and take a few shavings off a piece of timber the size of a credit card, particularly when you are holding said piece of timber in your other hand.

Simultaneously, I also learned that I have ninja-like reflexes when presented with an electric planer against the tip of my finger.

And that birds don't give any fucks how impressive you think your privacy screening is; everything exists for them to stand on and shit off. The fluffybunnys.

the origins of the term 'cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey'

Apparently, back in the day of ships and cannons, obviously keeping cannon balls next to the was a bit of a problem, even when stacking them in a pyramid, the bottom row still would slip and your pyramid would collapse.

A brass plate was made, with slight indentations in place to put each cannon ball and make your pyramid, making it a bit more stable, this was for whatever reason, called a brass monkey; however, as brass contracts in the very cold, often the indentations would all but disappear, and the balls would fall off - cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey

Well, there's one "homoeopathic" product out there with measurable activity ...

Many of them list alcohol as an “inactive” ingredient. Because labeling laws on homeopathy are so different from regulations on real medicine with proven ingredients, the only actual drug in a bottle of homeopathic medicine—ethanol, the same active ingredient in vodka—doesn’t have to be listed as a drug. This is not an isolated case.

CVS sells a store-brand homeopathic constipation medication labeled “safe and non-habit forming.” It is conveniently 20 percent ethanol, meaning it is a 40-proof hard liquor and saving you the trouble of hitting the liquor store. Because who doesn’t enjoy doing shots when they’re trying to beat constipation?
