The other thing is the Crusaders don't seem to be doing anything to prepare for Robertson's departure. Maybe they're doing a really good job of keeping things under the radar and nothing has leaked. But if the Crusader mafia was as strong as some suspect you'd have thought they'd be lining someone up.

If Robertson gets announced in mid-late December and the Crusaders don't have a replacement ready to go they're basically fucked.

But if the Crusaders have good reasons to think Robertson isn't going to get the job, then they might not be as worried.

@Cyclops Not true at all, that has already been addressed by Robertson in interviews.

I'm sure the Hammettuer is ready to return home when needed.

So either NZ coaches don't actually care about coaching the ABs anymore, or, they already know the outcome of the "process" and we are being given window dressing for appeasement

Good conspiracy or perhaps the process is truly transparent, now guarantees are being given and there is a two year contract up for grabs?

Maybe it is as simple as Japan and Aussie have come to these two and said - we will give you four years and $$$ if you sign here now.

In a truly transparent contest why would these two necessarily turn down the sure thing when at least one of them was going to leave empty handed.

This indicates that NZ Rugby has too high an opinion ( as I do) of the honor of getting to coach the ABs, suggesting that the appointment process may be too long and too complex, meaning that we aren't getting applications from the very best as other nations jump in with higher paying offers with greater security. That's a horrible reality if true, but should be considered.

I think it also suggests that we haven't looked at how to successfully bring top coaches home as part of coaching teams.

Eh, I don't know. It is a bit of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. Japan and Aussie have been able to nab these guys because they forewent a formal interview process and just headhunted (or in the case of Joseph reappointed) their men.

If the NZRU did that there would be an uproar.

Presumably the Board wants some measure of transparency as well being a new era, so a public stringent process looked good. A backroom deal would be slated by every media outlet in NZ.

So do OZ, Japan etc not have a long drawn out process? Did someone just say Rennie is the man, offer it to him? It seems strange they didn't even apply for the AB's. Surely JJ and Rennie could have said I will make my decision after the AB's announce their coach.

I guess you don't want to be the coach looking around when the music finishes to find all the seats are taken.

I've no doubt talks between JJ and Japan were well progressed and further cemented with their excellent RWC campaign. Additionally it makes sense that the ARU targeted Rennie early and it got to the point they were completing the agreement about the final five per cent...

    in a statement from Rennie:

"I'm a proud kiwi, but the thing is I'd been talking to Australia for a lot of months and the All Blacks interest came late in the piece. By that stage we'd done alot of homework & were really excited by the opportunity to go to Australia, so that ended up being an easy decision"

so was he not aware of the impending job vacancy when he started talking with Aus?

An easy decison...good luck to him.

No, he is saying the interest in him from the AB's came late.

Sounds as though it was an easy decision. Good on him. I wish him good fortune over there.

Here is to him building them up and us attempting to break them down.

He's doing an excellent job as Secret Agent Rennie - convincing them early that they've got a chance.

@Hooroo I realise what he said, but point is, surely he knew the AB role was coming up, and if he was keen, he wouldnt have gone balls deep in Aussie.

How would have he known they were going to ask him to apply given the incumbent looked to be Foster? He would have been a moron to just sit and hope?

Based on their actions, I think these other coaches realize they had little to no chance of getting the job

@Hooroo so you dont think he could have applied all on his own, knowing Hansen was stepping down? Or do they operate differently and only apply if shoulder tapped?

That goes back to my earlier point, did these guys think the job was a done deal, so have taken other options.

    @Chris-B Rennie the Roo?

If he beats us - the follow up headline could be "Roo-ted!"

Works even better if he hires Sir Graham as a consultant!

Sure he could have said I am available to coach and in the mean time looking elsewhere until I hear back?

It doesn't really work like that though

@Hooroo again comes back to how much he wanted to coach the ABs though doesnt it, we just assume he was dead keen...

Given he aint taking it this time round, could be a dozen or so more years before this chance comes around for him...given in all likelyhood he will be renegotiating an extension with Aus in 4 years, or looking for something else, I cant see him leaving Aus and walking into the ABs, which is why I plucked 12 years out...

I appreciate Aus were probably pressuring him to sign knowing themselves the AB job was coming up, but I am just saying, his supposed 'dream job' is coming up but he doesnt even apply...
