Well, except to use it as a warning. It's interesting to read how she was a gun owner but now gets a little hairy around them. Unsurprisingly, of course.

I mentioned earlier the Jim Jeffries clip I saw of him off-mic during a song break at a radio station in the US. The DJ is saying "I respect your thinking, but if I was your neighbour, and saw someone breaking into your house, I'd have no hesitation in shooting them."

Without trying to pick a fight, Jeffries takes the line of caution, essentially saying that just shooting and maybe killing someone isn't to be taken lightly.

I think these Rambo fantasies some people have are very disturbing. Short of someone directly threatening my family - and I mean imminent harm - it would be a very though decision to do that, with longstanding consequences for all concerned. -

Particularly when someone doesn't like their grades, or that guy who cracked onto their girlfriend, or that cheating slut who totally deserved it. -

In our last year of high school, a mate of mine who lived nearby had a car and his license. When we finished school (or skipped sport for "study" due to being in final year), we'd stop off at the local general store, pick up a couple of boxes of .22 and then go shoot coke cans for the afternoon.

The lady behind the counter wasn't about to say no to the money, and I'd make big noises about "picking up some rabbit control for Dad!"

I found this article on US police training quite interesting:

http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2015/12/police-shootings-laquan-mcdonald-mario-woods-knives-21-foot-rule
-

It shows a level of paranoia and, in a way, reinforces the lack of consequences facing police officers in these situations.

21 feet is about 6 metres. Which isn't far when you're shitting yourself about getting stabbed, and therefore a pretty easy reaction in terms of pulling the trigger.

But how you could shoot someone in the back? 16 fucking times? Jeez...
-
I have played around with the 21 foot rule (7 metres) during training and yeah, you have fuck all chance of drawing your weapon out of the holster and getting off accurate shots if an offender comes at you within that distance.

It's all very well saying police should de-escalate the situation but sometimes you can't. Every day there are good outcomes in these sorts of scenarios that never make the news. The one in a thousand that ends badly makes the news.

The offender is the one that sets the rules for any particular interaction with police. Brandish a knife or gun and the chances are you will find yourself dealing with a police officer that wants to go home alive at the end of the shift.

Lethal force is the last thing the vast majority of police want to use. You will never be the same again if you find yourself having to apply it.
Guns?.........or is that the least of the problems?
