I misread that article. Staff being stood down which isn't as bad as rissoled
Report on ABC News 24 that there is some talk of redeploying staff to Woolworths to assist in restocking.
Honestly that sounds sensible. I think maybe a volunteer program could be good for folk who are laid off. I didn't make it to my local this morning to view the crowds but it is only a matter of time before there will be riots if the supplies don't get in. There are a lot of people out there willing to serve their country or community and its hardly joining the military...could even pay them in toilet paper.
I doubt more supermarket staff will assist much. In NZ we are lucky in that we still run warehouse distribution systems with lots of stock. I'm sure NTA could enlighten us about Aus but in the UK the distribution is pretty much in/sort/out with manufacturers producing to order and in turn getting their raw ingredients the same way. Once the supplies are stripped at the shop the whole system has to catch up somehow.

The supermarkets have done a fair bit of PR in the last 24-48 hours demonstrating just how much stock they have.
The Federal Primary Industries Minister said we have enough food here to feed a population of 75 million.
It makes the supermarket mayhem all the more bewildering, really.

@barbarian yea they been saying here the usual backpacker jobs are no longer being filled

Woolworths have explained they're doing Xmas levels of trade which normally takes them five months to build up for. There's simply no way they can quickly scale to combat the absurd hoarding all these morons are doing.

When is the fruit picking season too? Without the usual supply of backpackers, I'm sure there will be plenty of jobs going there.
Local orchard has an ad in paper saying they cannot get staff to pick, orchard open to the public for $2 a kilo. Apples, pears etc.

the job losses in Cairns in the last 24 hours alone are at a level i would call catastrophic

@mariner4life Yeah I can imagine, mate was due to spend a week there from next week but has cancelled.

My Mum and her partner were planning to head to NZ in April, if they're able to travel within Oz they're going to head to Cairns.

it's pretty much our best case scenario at the moment.

NTA may know more but speaking to two friends in two major manufacturers down there while demand is eye watering (year long demand in two weeks in some obscure SKUs) but for staple products things are Christmas+, but supply chain is more of a bottle neck than manufacture going forward.
Also the two most relaxed Aussies I’ve talked to abou the situation for what it’s worth.

I'm a few trips down (Bluesfest, Malaysia, NZ) so wouldn't mind a trip up your way, I haven't been up there in about 8 years.

come. bring your friends. stay in a hotel. eat at a restaurant, visit some attractions.
it feels so callous to view this purely through the lens of an economic disaster rather than a health one (no confirmed cases here. yet)

Been thinking the same myself.
At some point the economic pressure that will result from this might prompt a re-think in the response. -

Yeah, I would definitely be all up for all that ... maybe not the hotel, serviced apartment probably. Once this initial scare quietens down and we settle into a new normal will definitely start some planning.
