So my boss - really nice guy, always means well and does fight my corner if it's required. But...I can't have a conversation with him about anything without getting one sentence in and then hearing a 5 minute (at least) personal anecdote from him on a same/similar topic. We have a weekly one-to-one and I've given up. There is no point me trying to raise anything anymore as I don't get a chance to say my piece AND I get regaled with a monologue about an experience I have no interest in.
I don't really know what to do about it - if I say something then I'm sure that would just make him completely shut down in future due to being so self conscious about it - or am I projecting?
Do you have access to his schedule? Why don't you catch him 5-10 minutes before his next meeting and only ask the priority question

@Machpants Yeah, seems like there is little development other than webmail these days. Most of the alternative desktop clients are just re-skins of Thunderbird.
I've not looked, but I'd guess that the only real active development of email clients would involve security/encryption clients. Not sure if there is anything good in that space.

@voodoo yeah think I just need a new boss eh. It's been better since covid as all the bosses have been busier, but he was back to a bit of waffling this week including telling me some stuff he found out from another consultant that I'd already told him last week.
Things are on the improve slightly I guess.

A friend of mine has one of these pages and seems to do ok out of it. Still works an everyday job though but guess the extra $ at the cost of a little dignity is worth it to her

I would look for a lot of other things if you want to make some side cash. Its not easy there is a lot of learning, trial and error and fake claims. Follow the Instagram page baller busters. They are constantly busting amazon coaches and others who are portraying a fake life.
If you want a little side income I would look at matched betting (search bonusmoney Australia...can do done with the TAB as well). Good start then if you want to continue from there check out the BF scalper (betfair scalper) course. More predictability than trying to get into FBA or anything like that.

I'm going to sound really old school here, but my general principle in these sort of opportunities is if you think ' how hard can that be' the answer is usually 'really hard'.
Fundamentally, find something that you have knowledge and interest in, and that's where you'll carve out a niche. That may be buying and selling stuff on eBay (classic computer games, stamps, whatever) - but to be good at it you have to knwo your market, and find a way of sourcing stock so that you make money on it. Bad news: the easy stuff is probably already taken (that's what markets tend to do - grab the low hanging fruit).
If you're a people person, a side gig in a pub could be a thing, or doing some part time work selling (ice creams, cornish pastys, whatever), or in the UK markets (rather than online)
Bottom line - there's no easy way to making serious coin, but find something that you are engaged with and you'll find a way to make a difference, stand out and find a way of succeeding. Also, be realistic about this; the actual money you make is a function of all the time you spend at this, not just the revenue. If it's eBay, your time will be in researching stock, ordering, receiving, holding, repackaging, shipping and then fighting the inevitable arseholes who claim it never arrived or arrived damaged. Then you have to scale up to make money, which takes time and stops it being a side gig.
Good luck - no matter what, just start something. If you challenge yourself you will learn shedloads as you go, and it'll help you in many aspects of life. Have fun, but be realistic going into whatever you start doing.

Not sure if this is the best thread or if I should start another one, but a move to Wellington is in the offing (new job).
The immediate plan is for me to live in Wellington during the week and fly back to Christchurch for the weekend. Any advice from the collective wisdom about how well that works and for how long?
Longer term, we are tossing up between a permanent move to Wellington or a temporary move, or just running the commute until I can relocate to Christchurch (should be possible at some stage, but it's a new role, so needs to "bed in" apparently).
This is complicated by owning pets, especially 2 dogs. My wife can probably transfer to Wellington when a job becomes available, so that should be fine. All our family is in the South Island (Christchurch for me, Christchurch and Ashburton for her), so that's the main reason to stay in Christchurch in the longer term (and all our friends and clubs are here as well).
Advice/experience on this is highly appreciated, as well as recommendations on renting vs owning in Wellington and good areas to aim for (and bad ones to avoid!).
Edit: No kids, job is in CBD off The Terrace.

@Godder Days Bay ferry takes you to queen's wharf and pretty easy trek from there up to the terrace. EB a mint spot for the dogs.
In the Hutt, the western hills would be worth a look. Newtown just out of the city looks pretty neat these days, similar to Petone in the Hutt. Kilbirnie and surrounding would give you a plethora of rugby clubs to support and "beaches" to head to.

The areas you mention would all be better for someone moving to Wellington who wants to get introduced to the city. Eastbourne is very nice but more isolated

@voodoo @canefan good points but what I will say about EB is it's a great little community, especially if you don't know anyone in the area. For example touch every Sunday at Williams park come rain or shine, all ages and abilities welcome!
Watch out if Ken turns up though, he only knows tackle.
Often bands, etc on at the pavilion, couple of great local cafes/bars where you'll get to know people, best rugby club in the country. And the cherry on top has to be the hugely successful lawn bowls club.

Anybody ever used a career coach?
I'm bored. Well, I wouldn't be if I was going into London, but working from home at my current crust is dead boring. IT's the interactions which made it. But this looks to be the way of the future. So I'm looking to do something completely different. I did a bike ride to Brighton the other day where one of the other guys used a career coach, as he was in a similar predicament. He said you talk about your interests / commitments / career path etc and the coach helps guide you as in to what your next steps are.
I've been thinking a lot about that lately. So wonder if anybody has used one?
