The more info that comes out about both exemption situations, the more furious I get. Especially at the lies. Health officials insisting they went non stop Auckland to Wellington, rest of NZ um no I don't think so. That's such a shitty habit with this government. Step one, no no couldn't happen. Step two did not happen. Step three it may have happened but we are not to blame.
Yes you fucking are to blame. And your floundering incompetence is downright embarrassing.

@Mokey
The fact that they are being hush hush is surely endangering more lives. Either they knew about the 2 women having contact and lied, or the women lied. If the women lied, and it seems they did, they should be named so that anyone who may have come into contact can come forward. No point protecting the identity of people who carelessly endangered lives when it is literally a life and death situation. -
@canefan And the PM specifically used the argument today that there had been significant pressure to grant exceptions. Including from the courts, she pointedly said.
Well, in the first place the pressure was coming from her mates in the media. They don’t represent the country. They are making noise to get clicks. Can’t our PM understand that’s not the basis for making policy?
Second, the pressure from the courts wasn’t to grant exemptions. It called out the Ministry for not using the discretionary powers available to it under the regulations they created. The judge didn’t think it was right to just say “No” without due consideration. The judge didn’t say that the answer had to be “Yes”. Of course people could and can always apply to the courts if they think the decision was unfairly reached, and I’m far more comfortable with a judge making the call than this shower.
And it was always an option for the government to change the applicable laws so they weren’t in breach. God knows they haven’t been slow to do that with under urgency for any number of issues when it suited them during lockdown. Why pretend you believe in open democracy now?

A breach was always going to happen - surely everybody recognises that.
Bit disappointing it happened so early though. 360 contacts ... lets see how this pans out.
It's not the specific breach so much as the systemic incompetence that it highlights (yet again) at the Ministry of Health.

@booboo Yeah, you would think that would be a bare minimum requirement. No more bullshit at the border. They need to get strict and professional. No more luxury hotels and lax conditions and 'are you feeling well' crap. Everyone gets tested at least once when they get here. No test, no entry. The MOH has screwed up so many steps of this pandemic and I'm really sick of excuses and no accountability. These officials need to get their act together, because luck and hope are not policies.

Little wonder people needed to be baby-stepped through the do's and dont's for L4 and down...a decent chuck of people are fucking stupid.
Truth slowly coming out
Might be because they were British.
I've been consistently scoffed on the UK thread when I've said the British public need everything spelled out with no ambiguity.
Otherwise they will fuck it up.

@MiketheSnow that and watching the beeb yesterday, I got a new understanding that Welly is "just a couple of hours drive" from Auckland. Wish I knew the route they took.

And as for the crew on The Project who were giving Michael Woodhouse a frosty time tonight for doing his job, for shame. Somehow he was at fault for asking questions in parliament rather than alerting the authorities with his information about the two women getting lost. And then he was asked about his use of the “kiss and cuddle” phrase. Because, you know, let’s get our priorities right.
I really hate those fluffybunnies. It isn't news, it's a fucking fluff piece and they farking love Cindy, after they've gone down on her they've forgotten that she and her lot have royally fucked up. The truth isn't a trickle, it's a flood now, and I AM SO FUCKING MAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Compulsory quarantine, no exceptions. You don't like it? Piss off back to where you came from
-
No more fucking 5 star hotels. I heard from reliable sources that many of the critters staying in said hotels smoke in the rooms and trash them
-
User pays for the right to quarantine in Godzone. Why are we, Johnny taxpayer paying for these people to stay? You want in, you pay your way
-
Quarantine is to be at a secure facility, like the empty defence base in Whangaparoa, all people to be fully supervised at all times
Lets not overreact again (wrecking the economy was an overreaction). Travellers (esp NZ citizens who have been trapped overseas) to NZ aren't criminals.
For example
-Treat people coming to NZ with respect and decently
-treat people differently from high risk countries compared to low risk. UK is high risk. Aust is low risk
-If someone wants to leave quarantine then proper testing MUST be done. But otherwise whats the issue. Esp from low risk countries
-My view is put them in good hotels (that would likely welcome people at present). Maybe they can pay a part fee but prisoners don't pay. And people are kind of being imprisoned
-Finds someone half competent to manage this process. That is don't treat arrivals as dangerous criminals. But don't be foolishly lax -

@Bones I am and it is from wearing these damn masks all the time. My friend runs an ER department in Forth Worth and his staff are complaining of the same thing.
Where you at? Id like to think those coming from a "hot spot" into a "covid-free" zone might think a little differently. Perhaps I'm too optimistic.

Am still missing why people in quarantine aren't tested. Repeatedly.
TBF this was questioned on this very thread a few days ago and the consensus view was if they're locked up for 14 days then testing isn't really necessary as if they've got COVID it will become apparent during the isolation period.
Turns out "if" was way more questionable than we all imagined.
I wasn't as apoplectic about these two when the news first broke as the majority. I put myself in their position. Parent dying - want to see them. Would have been incredibly grateful for opportunity to get to Wtn and could see that there was a case for a compassionate exemption - despite it not being granted previously. In that situation I would have made sure I was in a car that could make the journey without needing to refuel and would have made absolutely certain I didn't come within 50 metres of anyone else.
I must be going senile. I have now joined the pack and am livid with there women and even more so their fuckwitted friend. She lived through lockdown in NZ the two sick women were in the UK where it was a different landscape, but really.
It seems you cannot rely on peoples common sense and decency. Given the way a lot of NZ acted under Lvl 2 this shouldn't have come as a surprise I guess but 360 close contacts. Now we have to wait 14 days to see how much damage has been done. Hopefully none but it'll be luck not judgement if that's the case

I know that was the answer. I just don't agree.
Why the reluctance to test?
-
@dogmeat hasn't the testing every arrival only started since L1 (if we can believe this)
As I have already said, hopefully this just turns out to be the kick up the arse our Govt needed to get the processes right and no other people contract it from these retards running about NZ instead of being in isolation.

The cynic in me wonders if this latest incident will make any significant difference, given the spectre of a global pandemic over the last four months apparently didn't......
