My thoughts are with those officers shot, doing their job.

I happened to be on site at Kawerau today, interviewing. Just incredible that it was happening so close and we just carry on as normal.

Heard the commotion of the police cars but certainly didn't hear the shots.

I don't know what happened but I hope the person that shot them is eliminated.

Police get a hard time but I respect them immensely now I have grown up. So much so that I don't flash cars that one is up the road (I do flash for speed cameras though)

Looks like they have the gunman bailed up in a house, I'm sure all the cops surrounding it are keen to give him a nickle plated lead injection. Heres hoping he gives them a reason.

Yeah being a cop cant be easy, they are always in the wrong to someone; damned if they do, damned if they dont.

Yeah they believe he is in there alone, if thats the case, a few hand grenades through the windows and go home to thier families.

I never flash lights at people for anything, camera or not anymore, too many morons on the road in NZ.

Yep, tough being a copper all right. There's a case being heard currently in the UK whereby a couple of young chavs burgled some office and nicked a pick up truck. A car chase ensued and the police laid down stinger device to puncture the tyres, so the little bogan crossed on to the central reservation and mowed down the (clearly visible) copper standing there , then aimed the car at the next policeman too. First poor bloke was hurled through the air and died. The prosecution are going for murder and I hope they nail the little shits.

Mind you on the reverse side, playing the local police at rugby was always a messy affair. Dirtiest bastards around.

One of my dayjob tasks is updating a wall graphic each day on NZ road deaths. 70 people have perished on the roads so far this year, all age groups, all over the country.

Scum who speed, drive dangerously, drink and drive, drug and drive have been responsible for so many of these deaths. They don't deserve a light flash. EVER.

Seriously. Slow the fuck down.

And no, I don't envy the police their job. I couldn't do it, think I'd turn Judge Dredd within a week, tops.

So this is still going on, and now the gunmans family are blaming the police saying they are blocking them and a Maori liaison officer from going in and getting him out, cos he will come out if they tell him to.

So the police let them in, he shoots them, the police get in even more shit...

So true.

If he hadn't shot anyone then I could understand them letting them in to talk to him but he shot 4 humans!

The family sound like they aren't being very helpful . " he says he will surrender to whanau not to police" that must be particularly potent weed that he grows if he thinks that's likely.

Um yep. Dude, when you've shot 4 police officers, and one is in a critical condition, there isn't going to be any surrender to whanau bullshit.

Apparently he's been texting his family. From the Herald:

The gunman has indicated to family through text messages that he wants to come out but he wants the support of his family to do so and does not want to go to prison.

"He's scared," his mother said. "He knows what he's done and that's it for him."

So he's got a phone alright. I don't know why they don't just tell him he's being stupid and just to leave. But then again when you see what passes for logic in the family that's unlikely.

Police had no proof the shots had come from the house. They could have easily come from the other side of the road where there was a firing range, she said

"It has been traumatic being in a position that the whanau believe could have been avoided had the police found the time to find another way."

Not as traumatic as actually being shot though, eh?

Anyway, he's now been arrested. Now just wait for the whanau to protest his innocence.

Exactly. I'm also disgruntled on behalf of the officers seriously injured in hospital, and their worried families, thanks to that fucktard.

Well, I suppose if he comes out with family, he shouldn't have to go to prison since he's ending it peacefully. It's only fair. Maybe after shooting several people, he might be able to enjoy home detention. Perhaps even with conditions to allow him to work eight hours a day as well. In fact, bugger it - throw away the electronic bracelet. We just don't understand what he's had to go through over the last 18 hours. It's tough, OK guys?

Up next, I solve the Syrian refugee crisis using some crepe paper, a piece of dowel and some snips.
