<p style="color:rgb(77,77,77);">A court has heard of the various natural remedies a Canadian couple allegedly tried to treat their sick toddler, who eventually died, including maple syrup, whey protein and frozen berries. </p>

<p>David and Collet Stephan are currently on trial for failing to provide the essentials of life for their 19-month-old son Ezekiel after he died from meningitis in March 2012.</p>

<p>The pair only sought professional medical help when Ezekiel stopped breathing, and had been suffering from the disease for two weeks prior. </p>

<p>He died five days after being taken to a children's hospital in Calgary, reports Sydney Morning Herald. Mr and Ms Stephan have pleaded not guilty at the trial, which began in Alberta this week. </p>

<p>The couple run a nutritional supplements company and told police they preferred naturopathic remedies to traditional medicine.</p>

<p>When they noticed Ezekiel first become unwell, they gave him water with maple syrup and juice with frozen berries, before moving on to apple cider vinegar and horse radish root when his condition deteriorated. </p>

<p>I saw that too, the parents looked as obnoxiously smug as you'd expect people who'd kill their child trying to prove they knew better than science how to cure meningitis would.</p>

<p>That poor baby. Having had meningitis myself, I can tell you the pain in your head is horrific, plus the fever, stiff neck, nausea etc.</p>

<p>The parents should be thrown in a tar pit for the suffering that wee lad would have endured before he died. I mean maple syrup? Fuck me days.</p> -
