Kevin Rudd is a hopeless narcissist. How the fuck his name even got mentioned is beyond any sane person.

Two unfortunate things for Helen are that:

(i) it's perceived that it's Eastern Europe's "turn" to provide the next Secretary-General. That seven of the nine candidates are from the Balkans or nearby reinforces that idea and doubtless many deals have been struck on this basis; and

(ii) Being the first female S-G might have been a useful argument, but the Bulgarian lady from UNESCO and a couple of others offer Eastern European alternatives to that, as well.

Kevin Rudd? I think I'd rather the UN remained rudderless than have that Willis anywhere near the reins. Tell him he's dreaming.

I would not underestimate that prick. This has always been his ultimate goal. He built up an extensive network as a diplomat and then spent millions in taxpayer money travelling the world lobbying while PM.

Did you know that KR has a doppelganger who was posted to Canberra for a while and regularly approached as the Oz PM despite being a Euro working in his country's intelligence community. Made for some rather interesting stories as people would blurt out allsorts to him.

No big dramas or anything, was just rather funny.

Thinking a bit more about this, I'd guess that Kevin Rudd might be using Helen as a bit of a stalking horse for an eventual S-G from the Pacific (i.e. him, next time). Or - in the case that the Security Council decide to reject all of the current candidates* - he'd chuck his name into the second round as a "saviour". Seems late in the day for him to chuck his name in the ring for now.

* in the event that the US says to Russia, we're not having any of your Eastern European compadres, and the Russians go,"well, fuck you if you think we're having any of your western mates".

I'd guess there's a fair likelihood that we'll get whichever of the EEG candidates is least closely tied to Russia - and maybe a woman. The Bulgarian lady or maybe the Slovenian bloke?

Ceiling actually . I can never love her enough for giving us John Key and leaving labour to become an absolute shambles without her leadership.

That theory about KRudd using her as to campaign further down the track sounds depressingly plausible though .

Its the tough one with the UN, they can send peacekeepers, who will run away & leave you to be ethnically cleansed. Or stay and rape you.

Or they sell guns to the people trying to kill you http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-562497/UN-covered-claims-corrupt-peacekeepers-sold-arms-rebels-DR-Congo.html
Sometimes the first UN troops sent in are from a first world country , when people stop giving a shit about a crisis in a country they will never go to the troops from dumps that send troops overseas for money turn up and the raping and corrupt behaviour begins.

As usual it took him an age to make a decision but PM Turnbull has just announced that he will not back Rudd for job. I doubt the rest of the world realise the enormity of the bullet they just dodged.

Rudd issued a statement on Friday via Facebook saying it was a pity the government had declined to support his candidacy “as the Hawke government supported Malcolm Fraser for the post of secretary general of the Commonwealth, or the Howard government supported Gareth Evans to be head of Unesco.”

Classic Rudd delusions of grandeur. The lack of an endorsement says more about Rudd than it does Turnbull. He made this bed a long time ago and you must concur with Turnbull that there is a very high probability that he would fall into the same terrible habits he had in parliament. I have no doubt if this was Crean, Beasly, Macklin or even Swann that they would be rubber stamped by Turnbull and the cabinet.

Even within politics Rudd was such a dirtbag that honour among thieves doesn't apply to him. If I'm Turnbull I counter-offer him an ambassadorship to Syria, and Rudd is probably cocky enough to take it and think he can solve the situation.

KRudd coming out with some "but but but... " statements summing up again why NOBODY wanted him anywhere near the job.

A little bit of politicking by Labor about how the Libs shouldn’t exclude him on party lines safe in the knowledge that they would NEVER back him.
