those kayakers should be sent the bill!!
“It was great, we live for this stuff, getting out before work and enjoying it out there, really good surf," he said.
“We play it safe, I can hardly talk, my mouth’s frozen.“We’ve got all the safety equipment, we love it, we enjoy it.
“It’s only for experienced paddlers, if you’re not experienced you wouldn’t go out in this stuff, we always play it safe.”

If we stop people doing this sort of shit we are taking further steps to becoming a nanny state. Not something I would have done but I respect their right to do it.

@crazy-horse and if one of the SAR guys had been injured or worse attempting to 'rescue' them?
What they probably should have done was notify SAR they were going out, where they were going so they knew they didnt need 'rescuing' when reports came in there were people out kayaking.

Occupational hazard.

Massive upvote. Selfish entitled pricks.
No different to going up mountains. Tell someone what your plan is so they only need to endanger themselves if it is obvious that the plan didn't work. Apart from that you are welcome to go for it.
The simple fact that they took off from Seatoun dictates a need to tell others which way they were going (harbour or heads) -

I'm assuming that comment is made with tongue planted firmly in cheek?

Not necessarily disagreeing with the sentiment, but where do we draw the line? At everyone going out on the water at any time? When conditions are bad? If the later, who decides when conditions are bad enough? Public opinion after the fact is not fair.
-
@crazy-horse well there are warnings about the seas, ferries are cancelled, some coastal areas told to prepare for inundation.
I think it would be courtesy for them to notify SAR of thier intentions, I expect they didnt, cos they knew they'd advise them not to.
-
@snowy said in Alternative needed from the absolute crap of stuff.co.nz:
They also shouldn't expect rescuing.
I dont expect they did, but thats the thing, if they notified SAR, they neednt have attempted a 'rescue', when according to this guy, they guys were prepared for the conditions.
a simple phone call could have meant the only risk was to the fellas who chose to go out, not additonal people who really didnt need to go at all.

It just seemed rather dismissive to me.
As you were. -

As you were.Concise, not dismissive.
SAR provide a valuable service but aren't beholden to rescuing people. At all times they can make the determination that it's too dangerous.

Yep.
We didn't have controls and regs when I had to do some of it and it was dangerous. A narrow valley that I thought was the most likely to find a crash site in (and was correct) was also where a mate thought the same thing.
We missed by a couple of feet searching. Three plane crashes in one jungle valley. Great ay?

“Cooking steak in a toaster is literally a recipe for disaster. To have then left the house and toaster unattended for the sake of hot chips must be a constant source of regret. Never, never leave cooking unattended, even if you think you’ll just be a minute – and please, use your appliances for the purpose for which they designed. Toasters are for toast.”

I’d say all the Toilet paper he stocked up on ( cos I’m safely assuming he’s one of those types ) would have meant the house burnt pretty quick too.

@crucial policies changed from full replacement to sum insured following the Christchurch earthquakes, so I guess it is a new change... (although many insurers are now offering additional payout for non-natural disaster events, which this was, but if he has never updated it, or spoken to them)
I recall seeing a 'life hack' on a youtube or tik tok clip my kids were watching one day and was a dude on there said to cook your steak in the toaster!!

Incredibly dumb shit to put your steak in the toaster then go down the road for chips though.
