A mate at the rugby club got some info, no idea how or how accurate…
***Just got the update. Four stabbed. Toutai, his wife Rachel and two of the kids. His 18 year old daughter Madison is having her 18 birthday today. Toutai in extremely serious condition. Apparently the house looks like a war zone. Toutai put up a hell of a fight. His injuries are critical I am told. One 15 year old offender currently in custody. Homicide squad had taken point as the lead investigators. That scares me that the advice from the doctor is not looking good. Son got slasher from left shoulder blade down about 25 cm. Toutai got puncture wound right side abdomen and laceration right forearm Rachael the wife had a massive machete/slash the left forearm and was concerned because she could not feel her fingers. They detained 1x 15-year-old arrested at scene but 25 minutes later another 15-year-old presented at Mater public hospital with a stab wound. Looks like Rachael stabbed him in the back on the way out.***
15……That’s TWO years older than my oldest son. Just sickening.

Some "better" news here. Toutai Kefu has had successful surgery. His injuries are now serious rather than critical.
Once the criminals broke in, Toutai Kefu had every right to defend his property and family. If they attacked him back with a knife and an axe back then thats Attempted Murder.

bundle these pricks up and take them down the local rugby club as a tackle bag, there would be a que out the door

Fuckers that did this shit need to go to prison for a very long time as a punishment for what they did and as a warning to other young fluffybunnies out there.
Except that it seems it wouldn't be a deterrent and teens don't see consequences. Well that was the reasoning for dropping life sentences for juveniles in the US, although it's since been reversed.

One suspect still on the run, but I suspect the other two will rat him out.
Seriously impressed with Toutai Kefu's actions here. Hero!
Absolutely although I think we’d all get pretty feral if our families were threatened in the middle of the night in a home invasion.

Nuts can be used for kicking practice.

world rugby law variation: rucking is now acceptable in certain obvious circumstances...

Well luckily we live in a civilised society and this stuff is pretty rare for most people.
Without putting Kefu on a pedestal as some unstoppable fighting machine you’d have to imagine a sizeable former international rugby forward of Tongan descent would be pretty low on the “list of people to fuck with” though.

If only that were possible. I suspect it will be a slap on the wrist and a solemn promise not to do it again. Thank you civil libertarians. Doesn't matter about the lives scum like this destroy, apparently the most important thing is their rights.

I'm sure the whole Rugby family is thinking of Kefu and his family and hoping he pulls through. Proud that he defended his family against these tossers.
I'm the total opposite of a hang 'em and flog 'em believer, but in cases like these, I'll make an exception...
Just hope he and his family pull thru OK.

Interesting to read that they were on parole with a curfew.

Speaking from New Zealand perspective - the curfew to a juvie offender is about as useful as a the proverbial on a bull. They often come from homes where there is no respect for rule of law, or parents are out doing the same thing - so they just go out and do it over again. The threshold for having a juvie remanded in custody is incredibly high when it is for volume crime offences (burgs, car thefts etc). I'm hearing from cops here that since the NZ Police announced they won't be pursuing vehicles, the number of juvies stealing cars and doing "adult crimes" such as ram raids and agg robberies has sky rocketed, because they know they're untouchable.
When I was brand new in the CIB, we dealt with a home invasion where a bunch of juvies burgled a house in an upmarket area, were disturbed by the occupants and then beat the shit out of them with sports equipment found at the scene and weapons they had brought with them. They were so arrogant they weren't even wearing gloves or anything - the offenders were ID'd by fingerprints left in blood on the walls of the property. The victims were lucky not to die, but part of me thinks it might have been preferable, given the severity of some of their life-long injuries.
The punishment very rarely comes close to fitting the crime in these sorts of cases when it involves young people. Aside from the physical injuries his family has suffered, they will likely suffer long-term anxiety in regards to their personal safety, the sanctity of their house, and their trusting of strangers. Often that can last long after the physical injuries have healed.
Like everyone else, obviously hoping Kefu and his family pull through this.

Common sentiment obviously, but this kind of juvenile offending makes my blood boil.
What about an ankle bracelet for the next 20 years? It ain't prison, they get a chance to see how happy they could be if they worked on their lives, but they get zero leash to go out and do the same thing again. Only allowed at work or at home, or at a decent detention centre if there's no suitable home. Teach them that hard work can be learnt, and will bring far more success and happiness than spending the entirety of their time harming other people.
Also flick em in the clink for life if they reoffend or try and tamper with the bracelet.Might be a shit idea, but nothings working atm.
