This is a thoughtful read from key players in the devt. of the vaccine by Astra Zeneca (science was from the Jenner Institute in Oxford University). Without getting political, the corporatization of science, and cutting of public healthcare to the bone and beyond has been shown up pretty globally by Covid.
MERS is a coronavirus and italics are my own of course ...
Sarah Gilbert, Saïd professor of vaccinology, Jenner Institute [Before Covid] I was developing vaccines against a range of emerging pathogens, specifically MERS, Nipah and Lassa [virus]. We also had applied for funding to work on preparedness for “disease X” – the unknown pathogen that is coming. But it wasn’t funded, so we didn’t manage to put any of those plans in place.
Teresa Lambe, associate professor, Jenner Institute We and others have sacrificed so much during this pandemic. I don’t want the next generation to have to do that. I don’t want my kids to have to do it. And it’s only a matter of time to the next pandemic – because there will be one. We need to put processes in place so we’re in a better place next time. I worry that we’re going to try to run into the sunset and forget what we’ve learned and what we’ve sacrificed.

The cat is well and truly out of the bag. We must be ready to face up to living with covid19 whether we feel ready or not
That's the conclusion that Victoria came to, despite being the jurisdiction with reportedly the longest and harshest lockdown in the world.

Aren't they still in lockdown? I haven't talked to my sister there for a week, last time I spoke they were

Has some good points but for me it seems to report from the angle that covid is bad, rather than really highlight the numbers/% of deaths and hospitalisation of those that are unvaccinated...sure it mentions it, but the tone of it to me is more how bad covid is

Terrible. Covid does not cause “weeks of severe pain”. At least stick to the facts.
"If you get vaccinated you might face a day or so of discomfort. If you don’t, there is a risk of death."
Sigh. If you are healthy you might feel under the weather for a couple of days without vaccination. Risk of death is a little ripe or more hyperbole. If you are older, obese, diabetic or immunocompromised you are at risk but they have better treatment now and knowledge of the virus. Otherwise everyone else take a long deep breath. Jeez you kiwis are showing no balls. I thought we were a tougher crowd. I am 57 year old male, 58 tomorrow, could lose 30lbs to get down to a good weight, one day of fever then a couple of days feeing a little weak and sleeping like a log but able to get out and walk a couple of miles. I realized you only hear about the deaths but most people survive. Not minimizing it but this this is not going away. Thank the Chinese (government for you wokesters out there). Work on you health. Get away from carbs. Exercise outside (dumbest thing to confine people to there homes as covid is not floating around in the air and if so in what concentrations). I truly feel sorry for you guys. You are boxed in with the wrong people in control.

This person that has moved to Katikati and then gone on a shopping spree...gotta wonder if there are rules in place when these people get special passes to allow moving over the border...similar to giving people passes before checking credentials, little wonder things are going the way they are.
Apparently the 2nd ho that came north has been contacted by police but not yet located (no idea if she up here or back in Auckland) so even if we get zero new cases, I don't think they will move us out of L3 due to the unknowns...not to mention however many dudes/chicks they shagged up here, have to assume some of them likely not gonna get tested anyway for fear of linking them, outing themselves if they are in a relationship.

There are rules and the story I heard last night was that they followed all of them and tried very hard to do the right thing. They got permission, they got double-jabbed, they got tested three times (all negative), they scanned everywhere they went and wore masks.
Nothing unusual in having to go to the shops after moving house.
Shit like this is going to happen. One minute people are crying out that we need to come back into the big world, next they seem to want no freedoms at all. I don't get it.

When lockdown is the consequence, people are going to get upset

Did they follow the general population rules or the (government approved, agreed and supported) gang member rules?

If they went to KFC they followed gang rules

I thought the message had been that if you moved from 1 level to another you were to 'take your level' with you?
Cindy on TV this morning, way she talked there is unlikely any change to alert levels...maybe Northland and Waikato might be allowed picnics though?
Also makes you wonder if some sex workers have been falsifying docs to move about, as to me that's the only reason why she this woman got tested, as she had been doing this already and been OK before, just now she tested positive...
-
Looks like I'll be trying to sell my house when the pandemic truly actually arrives. Open homes etc. Quite inconvenient.
Dont think it really matters from a big picture POV if my town gets 1 or 2 weeks before or after places like Northland or Katikati, but just my gripe...
Not like I'm running a business like some of you, so a bit of perspective I guess ...
-
Fingers crossed the vaccine might have saved this one from rolling out further.
-
@donsteppa meanwhile, the fate of Northland is in the hands of 2 prostitutes...one of who they still dont know where she is and the other being uncooperative...apparently they have 20 close contacts of the one that tested positive, but are unsure if they are in Northland or Auckland....

I thought I heard the PM clearly state this morning that they weren't sex workers.
Not sure why that would be important to most people anyway except being somewhere to direct their anger and feel morally entitled. It's a red herring. Just be fucked off that the idiots broke the rules and won't cooperate. That's more than enough. It's like Winston trying to drum up outrage about 'gang connections'. Jeez, I treat gang members like they have the plague anyway and keep well away so in my books they are a pretty safe group. Let it fester among them.

I think it's of interest because it's a pretty good guide as to whether physical distancing was adhered to, and whether or not they will ever cooperate with contract tracers...
-
@crucial I didnt hear her deny them being sex workers, and Winston was very late to the party on that front so he has nothing to do with it, his 'source' supplied the same information I had seen the night before, which included detail about movement with the MM leader.
The only thing I have heard actually refuted is that she travelled with the MM leader, most reports still sate 'suspected to be a sex worker' which actually makes alot of sense when you look at how uncooperative she is being given the reasons why they wont disclose where they have been or who with.
Plus, I wouldnt trust Cindy to tell the truth anyway, or at least what she hasnt been told...
Oh, and I am fucking pissed at these bitches, sex workers or not, they are selfish fluffybunnies...I have no idea what time frame they can go with us having no cases before relaxing us out of L3, I mean if they are sex workers, what dudes are gonna come forward for testing?
-
@crucial Winston being Winston. I heard the rumours from so many sources. All of whom swore it was well documented but couldn't show where. Then Winnie came out with his normal BS gossip mongering that stop just sort of anything litigious. Gets his publicity oxygen and then disappears back into the swamp. Whananaki looked nice though

The same people you say 'don't trust mainstream media' are happy to say 'but it s being reported all over the place'.
The fact that putting the word sex in a headline is guaranteed clickbait is a huge clue to make you be careful.
