Haha, although he deliberately sets out to watch stinkers, I assume @bayimports is meaning big budget/studio movies that are crap?

Joker.
Dark, miserable sad. Really hard watching, not for me.
However. I cannot think of a better performance than
Phoenix. In anything. Ever.4 laughs out of 5 bad teeth.
Yep. Was really good. Makes the other Joker performances (including Ledger) look like campy shit.
Still scratching my head about why there was a prerelease freak out. The dude wasn't an Incel and was banging a hot black woman. He murders some white yuppie arseholes on the subway. I thought it was brilliant how an essentially good person can become completely effed up because of the way he's raised and treated by his caregiver and then society. I think the scary part is how this kind of "uprising" could definitely take place in a post-covid world.
Digression and half arsed undergraduate review over. Excellent film and one of the few I could actually continue watching to the end these days.
No he wasn't, pretty clear that was all in his head.

Buddy Games: Warning. If you see this movie on your streaming service and think "oh, it looks like fun, looks like a Game Night style movie, oh and Olivia Munn is in it too", slap yourself and go and watch some paint dry. What an absolute turd. It goes for raucous shenanigans comedy but just doesn't pull it off.
This is in my top three worst movies I've seen this year along with Chaos Walking and ZSJL. I think Amazon deserves to give me a month free subscription for putting this in the highlighted section of the service.
seriously you looked at that cast and thought you might get any more than a polished turd? Expectations far too high. I laughed at times, not as often as I liked, it was pretty bad but not bottom three of the year. I have seen a few I just couldnt even watch to the end during lock down and most I couldnt even remember the names
..one was some poor budget comic attempt called archenemy (I lasted 30 minutes)... Thankfully I havent watched the other two you have mentioned.
In the big budget line surely Wonder Woman hits the top three turds.
Watched it last night and resorted to FFWD through the obvious set pieces. Then it even managed to jump it's own shark toward the end. Massive pile of crap and I am now really worried the the same director is going to ruin Rogue Squadron.that was drawn out far too much..and became quite a stinker
Perhaps we need a new thread to determine the biggest pile of dung for movie watching in the last year
i quite like the first WW, end battle a bit shit but i liked the idea of the bad guy just basically nudging people to do what they do, war, biggest issue i had is aries could have actually been an ongoing badguy and that could have given more reason for the decade jumping WW does, a couple of movies where she pops up in war ravaged times trying to hunt him down
WW84...was not good...even in concept

that was great, when you click he is actually full on delusional, and has been for most/all the film, not just a nice/weird guy driven the extreems

campy shit might be a bit far, he was still nowhere near the comic book camp of the joker, and he is a comic book character after all, the other jokers all had a guy that dresses in a bat costume to play off so you know...fit for purpose

WW was good aside from the fact they went with WW1 instead of WW2 and then made the Germans out to be Nazi-like. Should have just gone WW2.

Dunno about that. Ledgers performance was incredible, certainly not shit. I think the difference is that I felt Ledger was playing a character, whereas I felt that Phoenix joker was a very real, troubled, mentally ill person.
Still scratching my head about why there was a prerelease freak out. The dude wasn't an Incel and was banging a hot black woman.
Yeah, it's not an incel movie as the story isn't about his inability to get laid. BTW, was he banging her? I thought that was in his head, like the first scene where he goes on De Niro's show.
He murders some white yuppie arseholes on the subway. Yeah, absolutely. That's exactly what it's about. There is no doubt that in a post Covid world, certain places / cities are at risk of having some elements of Gotham as portrayed in Joker.
Digression and half arsed undergraduate review over. Excellent film and one of the few I could actually continue watching to the end these days.
Yeah agree. Excellent film, but not one for me. Just too dark.

People wank on about Ledgers performance simply cos he died and elevating dead artists to another stratosphere is the done thing to do.
Tom Hardy as Bane shat all over him in my opinion.
Bullshit on the first one. Ledger's Joker was an incredible character portrayed by one hell of an actor. Worthy Oscar performance.
Second one is just an artistic opinion I disagree with, so not fair to call it bullshit ...

Not sure about that. I'd argue he may not have even been nominated if he hadn't topped himself. Not saying it wasn't a great performance, but Oscar winning?

i thought there was chatter about "oscar worthy" before he died, during filming even that he was taking it too a different level

Watched a while ago - found it really hard to watch as well. Might be worth a re-visit soon to see what it does for me.
Yep, I thought Phoenix was outstanding. Tour de force performance which made you watch even though it was uncomfortable.

Heath Ledger never did it for me overall. Similar to River Phoenix, I just think people use their suicides as a way to highlight how “troubled and tortured” they were and point out how they “brought it out in their performances” and other such bullshit as a way to make themselves feel intellectually superior.
He was decent, easily the best role I ever saw him in but the moment he died the wankfest started in earnest.

Being awarded an Oscar isn't the best measure IMO. Shakespeare In Love won Oscars.
While people can argue about the relative merits of performances, when someone rubbishes Ledger's Joker, I wonder the level of oxygen deprivation of having their head shoved that far up their own arse.
I don't like Joaquin Phoenix but I can acknowledge his performance was amazing. Absolutely believable and compelling from an artist with hugely disparate work.

Who was rubbishing his Joker? Seems the only real "criticism" is that it was really good but perhaps not the genius performance some claim.
I think what sets Phoenix's Joker apart is the realism of it all. Nicholson and Ledger were doing their job by camping it up a bit (they're Batman films after all) but there was nothing amusing about the latest incarnation.
