Alec Baldwin has shot and killed a cinematographer on the set of the upcoming Western movie Rust, after a prop firearm he was using in a scene discharged in a tragic accident.
The woman died and a man was injured when a prop gun was "discharged" by Baldwin at the New Mexico location, the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office confirmed.
The killed woman was identified as cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, and the injured man as director Joel Souza, 48.

Production has been halted on the Western movie Rust after the incident.

It looks real-real bad for Alec. Still investigating, but it sure looks like he’ll be facing a manslaughter charge, plus lots of criminial negligence charges and civil damage lawsuits. He’s co-producer of the film. LA Times today has extensive notes about unionized workers walking off set, replaced illegally by scabs days before; three, count’em THREE accidental misfires before Alec unloaded, and internal memos & text messages days before the mishap calling the set “super-unsafe.” Eye-witness testimony and receipts on everything. Baldwin is on the hook for ALL of that.

At least one of the camera operators complained last weekend to production managers about gun safety on the set.

@kid-chocolate I’ve seen people calling for him to be held responsible but more people pointing out that’s not normal on a movie set, that the prop master and someone else, whose title I can’t remember but not the producer, are responsible for making sure firearms are safe, not the actors. It may depend on if he did anything to cause it too misfire

Yeah, even as a producer it’s not going to be on him. The are two people who’s job it is to make firearms safe on set and they have to pass it between them before it gets close to an actor.
There will be lots of uninformed bullshit written about this.

@kirwan I dunno, given the litigious nature of the US, I expect he could be in the line of fire with others.
In NZ under the H & S in the workplace act, the CEO/DIrectors of the company will be party to any charges as they have to be all over any H & S processes along with several others lower down the ladder.
Which is why Peter Jackson resigned form the board of Weta Works when this legislation came in following Pike River as he said he couldnt keep a close enough eye on the goings on knowing he could be held responsible if somethign happened.
Also, not sure Bond is out yet, even on some of the raging river sites...but I did see Dune there a few days back when I was riding the rapids

From what I read, they were rehearsing a scene, it accidentally discharged

does anyone know why they would have even had real rounds on set? and they keep saying it was a prop gun...but if a prop gun can fire a normal round doesn't that just make it a normal gun?

For sequences that require real rounds? The issue isn't that there are live rounds, it's that they've been managed in a way that has permitted them to be mistaken. Like range management 101; never mix ammunition.
Movie sets will by their nature be a compromised departure from good weapon handling.
What strikes me as fucking odd is this snjippet from the article:
The gun that was fired was one of three laid on a cart by the film‘s armourer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed.
What were the other two for? How did the deputy director know which one to grab?

@antipodean ok, what kind of scene can only be shot using real rounds? applying the first rule of HSE (elimination) im honestly surprised thats a thing, that scenes cant be filmed using some sort of CGI/special effects etc

Think about how many films use guns, this is a sure rare occurrence as you can tell from the coverage. A bit coming out about the 24 year old "master of arms" responsible for the gun on set, who got the job via her dad. Previously has given live guns to kids.
