@antipodean It's the US #1's so tends to wards a certain blandness IMO

I'll disagree with that one.
As much as I'm not a fan of anything else O'Connor has done I think she did a perfect rendition of this. Even Prince couldn't top it and he wrote it.
Was massively overplayed to the point of annoying though.
I'll stick up for Sinead as well. This is a really interesting article on that song, as a part of a wider series into every US number 1. Sinead ripping up a picture of the Pope on SNL looked insane at the time, but has aged remarkably well. https://www.stereogum.com/2160540/the-number-ones-sinead-oconnors-nothing-compares-2-u/columns/the-number-ones/
Wow that's a catalogue of awful memories. Just look at the crap that made number one in 1989 (https://www.stereogum.com/category/the-number-ones/?chart_year=1989)
Phil Collins’ “Another Day In Paradise”

Gloria Estefan’s “Don’t Wanna Lose You”
New Kids On The Block’s “Hangin’ Tough”
Paula Abdul’s “Cold Hearted”
Richard Marx’s “Right Here Waiting”
Prince’s “Batdance”
Martika’s “Toy Soldiers”
Simply Red’s “If You Don’t Know Me By Now”
Fine Young Cannibals’ “Good Thing”
Milli Vanilli’s “Baby Don’t Forget My Number”
Richard Marx’s “Satisfied”
New Kids On The Block’s “I’ll Be Loving You (Forever)”
Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings”
Michael Damian’s “Rock On”
Paula Abdul’s “Forever Your Girl”
Bon Jovi’s “I’ll Be There For You”
Madonna’s “Like A Prayer”
Fine Young Cannibals’ “She Drives Me Crazy”
Roxette’s “The Look”
The Bangles’ “Eternal Flame”
Mike + The Mechanics’ “The Living Years”
Debbie Gibson’s “Lost In Your Eyes”
Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up”
Sheriff’s “When I’m With You”
Phil Collins’ “Two Hearts”
Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative”Big year for Paula Abdul and Milli Vanilli.
Of course the latter get vilified for shit songs that they didn’t even sing.
Paula on the other hand gets a pass for some actually quite decent pop tunes and for being insanely hot.

There's some bloody good songs amidst the dross though. "The Living Years" is a great song.
And am I the only one who really rates Genesis - old and new - but thinks Phil Collins is utter shite?

@jc Never heard or heard of that song.
Well, aren't you the lucky one...
Not really, as I just played it.
@jc said in Worst songs of eras:
@nepia Then don't play it. There's still time to save your sanity.
It was a shit disco song, which was already a pretty low bar.
See above, too late.

There was a lot of shit in the grunge era, but this was the most mawkish, and nakedly striving to be sensitive and deep - pure retarded adolescence. Vedder was very cringe, and this was a song he wrote before joining Pearl Jam.

It’s gonna be really awkward when someone posts something and someone else mentions how much they like it.
It took 2 minutes. This tune is an absolute anthem for me.
One of my best rugby memories (I was not a flash player) involves us singing this song in the bus on the way home from a win (Raglan I think).

worst 80 hair rock song
worst 90s "alternative"
-
@antipodean I remember the Bette Midler song being on the radio all the time and it did irritate after a while. Didn’t mind the Fine Young Cannibals and still have some of their stuff on my early years playlist
-
@mariner4life That Cranberries song is the worst of any genre in the 90s. Just fucking awful, and even worse for being a serious attempt at a statement song. shivers from cringe

I HATE that this kind of shit made some piston wristed gibbons rich.
I think that every time I hear a skrillex "song".
-
@mariner4life zombies just grates me
-
-
@taniwharugby not a lot of merit there
-
i feel like novelty pop songs taht were popular for about 10 minutes should be immue to this thread
Zombies is supposed to be a deep song still well regarded 30 years later
it's fucking rubbish
The Scorpions reckon that song solved teh Cold War
