Agreed, I have always though we should have bought a club in Europe. Aside from the commercial opportunity it would have been great to have this option to expose coaches and players to European rugby

    You know what, fuck it!

    Smith
    Havili
    Clarke
    Goodhue
    Ioane
    Reece
    Jordan

    Fakatava
    Beauden
    RTS/Jordie/Faingaanuku

That backline is told to score only in multiples of 5, right? So which one of the forwards will be taking PKs and conversions? 🙂

    This one.

@Bones It’s an interesting one but he is not playing there and he is not a 2nd five. Might have to leave Canterbury if he even wants to play there. Another player possibly screwing himself by being a utility

Aumua needs to be backed in my opinion. Admittedly he hasnt fulfilled the promise he showed 3 seasons ago but we can’t carry on with a 74 yr old Dane Coles and Codie Taylor who has been a fading force in the last 2 years.

Samsoni should be starting. Built for test rugby that boy. Taylor kept on for experience and off the bench and they should commit to Aumua and back themselves to get the best out of him. 3 years ago, Aumua was our potential answer to Malcolm Marx. He hasn’t help himself and has been injured at times which has slowed his development but I don’t think we can afford to disregard and potentially lose young players like him when we are losing our depth and we have a potential world class player on our hands.

Given his performances in the U20s it would be a fair bet George Bell overtakes Aumua and co fairly quickly over next season or two.

His challenge is he wouldn’t even make the Crusaders if he wanted to press his claims at fullback. On paper he’s an ideal 12, good passing game, kicks well, good decision maker, passable defender and when he gets his running game going albeit against weaker sides it goes well. Unfortunately his running game gets exposed against top sides who defend well.

@Old-Samurai-Jack Its funny that Tuipulotu gets singled out and yes, I agree that he should be put out to pasture, but there are a lot of other guys that should be joining him too that don't cop anywhere near the same criticism.

How some people keep justifying Codie Taylor being there is beyond me. He's been terrible at the big boys level for over 2 years now and people still find an excuse to pick him. He shouldn't even be jn the squad (along with Tuipulotu and others).

@TheMojoman at super rugby level but has not shown anything at international except against the minnows. I think @Bones was suggesting 1st five but he would have the same problem in Canterbury.

We are talking about DH at 10? Please no. He was barely adequate there for the Crusaders. DH's best position is 15 IMO.

Tuipulotu is a disappointing one. He’s a gigantic human being up close and looks the perfect guy to take on those Bok, French and English packs……( he takes up loads of room when walking down a plane aisle ) but he just hasn’t kicked on ( but other lesser performers get picked like you mention )

At the Blues he generally takes a few starts to get into good form. Usually he doesn't play well for the Blues after an injury or break (there was one exception in 2021)

I'm not sure he'll ever play well being the 4th or 5th lock in the squad

@KiwiMurph I reckon we might see Jack Goodhue in the midfield - and perhaps Rieko back to the wing.

I like the idea of Goodhue and Rieko together, even though I haven't rated Goodhue at 12 in the past. Just think they might compliment each other well, Goodhue very organised on defense and good at putting his outsides away, while Rieko is always a massive threat with ball in hand and is a very good tackler.

That's a great and established combination... with Jack at 13 where he plays well and Rieko at 11 where he plays well.

Therein lies the problem, chop and change. If Rieko is the long-term 13 then play him there and select around him. Otherwise you get to the RWC and we still don’t know who our best centre pairing are.

That's always gone well. For those barracking Goodhue, remember for all his benefits he's about as fast as a one legged prop.

@Steven-Harris Wasted choice. A rental of a geriatric, who had a good game against the Brumbies and was solid the rest of the season at super rugby level. That would be a step backwards and conservative. His AB career ended a long time ago.

It's not a wasted choice if he's selected alongside newbies, or as cover from the bench while the likes of Vaai get starting gametime.

He's simply too slow for Test rugby. You select him on the bench for a 20min effort at the end and five minutes into the game, a lock goes down injured. Recipe for disaster.

And I don’t think he’s played for the abs since 2021

You're ready made for a media job with thinking like that!

2021 was less than a year ago mate.

any idea which was his last game? was it even in 2021?

@Bones I like ALB, and would be happy with whoever is looking most dangerous and making fewest mistakes out of those wingers.
RTS maybe, and I'm not that down on Tupaea either - but the first thing we need to do is get our error count down. I'm not convinced yet by Jordie at 12, but I am convinced he isn't half the 15 that Jordan can be.
Havili I like as a player, but I think a bit of size at 12 as a bail-out option is a very handy thing with Mo'unga at 10.

Two things for me get the error rate down plus organise our kicking game. It’s a shambles.

If we want to do the box kick then we need oat least 2 chasers who compete for the ball not the 1. This option is over used for me as an exit option. Noticeable how hard the Irish chased as a group when they kicked - like they knew when and where they were kicking to. Preferably we should be kicking earlier when on front foot running on to the ball, and long into corners, as part of our plan not just once we are static and the halfback is passing behind the forwards to flat footed first five. And, use the cross kick a lot less - I know it’s about stretching the D, but it’s a low % option. No good if we just hand the ball over to opposition.

Goodhue at centre makes no sense given our current "plan" because he is significantly less likely to beat a guy one-on-one.

@kev thats the thing, Ireland players were in sync, knew thier roles, knew the game plan, even when things went off piste, they knew what the likely play was going to be, extremely well coached and drilled, nothign hugely complicated either, just all reading the same page.

Just good rugby, played accurately at pace, total trust in one another.

I wonder how that happened,Good coaching,Leadership, structure and decent game plans may be.
Basically we are playing a sort of hybrid sevens game.
