All Blacks v Pumas 1

A few questions:
Will Retallick come back into the 23?
Will Ofa be back?
Mo’unga vs Barrett
Frizell vs Ioane
Will Reece, Fainga’anuku or RTS feature at all in this series?
Will some of the squad get to play NPC?
Oh yeah, I heard that Sotutu has made the squad. Congrats to him.

@ACT-Crusader wouldn't be surprised to see Beauden to fullback with RTS and Reece on the bench.

If Ofa or Nepo back I'd expect them to get a start.
Need to manage mileage of Big Sam and Scooter, but no one else obviously covers middle of lineout.
Cane/Frizell merits another start. Option of resting/benching Ardie and giving Sotutu a start.
Hard to see change 9-10-12-13 unless Goodhue available.
Room for Reece to start in back three.Perhaps could tweak bench loosie. Plenty of choice.
Fakatava might earn some minutes. BB 10. Could do with some fresh thinking in utility back possie. An intitial win, would then allow scope for several other squaddies to get minutes in Puma 2.

Be good to see RTS given some time but think Pumas 1 will likely be the same as Bokke 2 barring injuries.

Agreed

@pakman I have no real opinion on who should be starting at 3 but hopefully Fletcher will remain in the reserves, De Groot starts again at loosehead please, probably was 1 of Frizell's better tests stick with him for now🤔 & yes Fakatava shall be seen in Black again soon🤞wanna see Will Jordan get a run at 15 but I'm just a fan so I don't know if it would be best for the team🙂

I quite like idea of Crusaders 'bomb squad'. Good way to start Fletch's AB journey.

Christie seems first choice bench 9 and does that job really well but I suspect Foster & co. will want to give Fakatava that role in Pumas 2 - provided Pumas 1 isn't a disaster.

@Victor-Meldrew I think Smith will get a rest sometime.

Maybe in Pumas 2 if P1 goes to plan.

Yeah. And I feel a lot more confident about that than I did a year ago.

Yeah, gotta give reward for performance and time for some too cement their place. Changes for arg 2, game face for bled 1 Eden park, foster cannot afford to lose there

If you listened to Foster in the few actual rugby related questions in his PC he perked up when asked about the young props and whether he thinks they may have found what they are looking for. I expect them to get another go and be firmly in the experience gathering phase.
Frizell will start over Akira. Akira’s biggest flaw was obvious the other night and that is that he is an upper body player and they want more leg drive. If I could be bothered I would try and find clips but he carries leaning into the tacklers and swatting/shrugging away without pumping the legs. I really hope he can get past this instinct as it doesn’t serve well at top levels. Frizell usually drives that extra half metre plus and has the tacklers going backwards.
I think we will stick with the midfield. Any testing there will only come from the bench and at the moment the plan seems to be QT covering both positions (as ALB would). RTS doesn’t offer that. -

So what you’re saying if Akira doesn’t fend the guy straight away he goes to ground ?
He looks more capable of going up the guts than Frizell at first glance I have to say.
-
@MN5 Attack was setup deeper in that game. It helped the midfield and forwards in particular who were able to run onto the ball rather than get the ball static
Hopefully they stick with that alignment going from now on. It's closer to what they all used at SR level

I’m at pains to point out that I’m not an Akira hater. I love watching X factor type skills and players that bring something different/extra. That’s why I will often defend DMac. It would be hypocritical if I didn’t also like Akira
With both though I can see why their strengths become their weaknesses at the very top levels and habits that work well for them elsewhere don’t translate.
They are great against all except the good forward power based teams of which, sadly for them and us, there are a couple more at the moment.
I can see why there is reluctance from selectors
