Schools are starting to cancel attendance tomorrow. Good call.
Superb Owl at home this year - not risking public transport in the teeth of a storm unfortunately. Going to be smoking up some moink balls - beef meatballs wrapped in bacon (moo + oink). My smoking area is pretty sheltered thankfully...

Is quite odd, sky is fairly bright all things considered.
Wind and rain picked up in last hour or 2, we have had no power for 2 hours now, 65mm in last 24 hours, 30mm in last 5 hours.
she is a huge system

We've deployed up North and it is nowhere near as bad here as forecast, thankfully. Looks like it is worse back down south, power out at my place too.
-
@Machpants our power came back on, fully expect it to go off again though
We are having big gusts, the odd heavy downpour and then almost calm for a period...I have a maple I planted which is about 6m and it bends pretty well, the neighbours totara that are probably 15-20 barely seem to move at all with the wind.
It aint looking too flash the next 24+ hours, hope she calms down and doesnt cause too much more carnage

Power back off...northpower advise likely off all night and possibly days.
Far North power outages are similar I believe

This YouTube channel is a good place for detailed discussion and forecasting
Good post Crucial.
And it explains what an extratropical cyclone is.
Was always under the impression that once said cyclone drops below the threshold of being an actual cyclone (i.e., when the pressure isn't low enough) it becomes an "ex" cyclone (like ex-TC Seth earlier this year, or ex-TC Oswald from Australia Day 2013 who kept me employed for quite some time back in the day).
Pretty sure that's still the case. But seems Gabs is retaining the very low pressure so retaining the title "Cyclone".
Kinda makes no difference to the effect of the bitch's wind and rain though ..

10 years since I was last home. Just touched down at Auckland from LA. Pilot did a first class job. But honestly was not too bumpy. Knew I was on an Air NZ flight when the air hostess said the flight was chocka

Pretty stoked TBH. 2 youngest kids born in Ireland, first time in NZ.
-
@Billy-Tell awesome mate, enjoy!

Welcome home!

Apparent temperature is currently ~5° colder than it was at midnight.

Does look pretty bad up there.
Our heavy rain in Auckland has yet to really arrive but will be here early this evening by the looks.
Coromandel is getting smash. Never seen Matarangi looking so wet. Heaps of wind and a decent storm surge too, so more beachfront erosion damage
-
@Machpants think that evac order was along with high tide, rain hasnt been heavy today, just steady, we've had c 200mm in 36 hours.
Winds died back most of today but I heard she is picking up, up north as the back end of Gabrielle swings by,
To make matters worse, power is off again, this time due to some fluffybunny speeding along a nearby road, hitting water and aquaplaning into a powerpole....so many outages around the place.

This all my fault. Work started full on on my relocated 1920s house two weeks ago. Look what the weather has done since.
As of this morning I have a relocated pile of rubble.
At least I didn't see it happen as we were in the dark. No power for 24 hours now.
