Anyone know much about Je ry Shipley? I see he has been named in the one day squad and is being touted as an all rounder. I am hoping he is not another bits and pieces player, ok at both but not outstanding in either.

26 year old 1.95cm all rounder plays in the Country comp in Canterbury.
Decent pace and sharp bounce being a tall bowler.
    Good bat.

A few from the Shipley family have been decent cricketers and rugby players.

Would he be good enough to hold a spot in either discipline if he wasn't an 'all-rounder'?

As a bowler yes, below from an article on him

He was the leading wicket-taker in last season’s domestic Super Smash T20 competition (18 at 14.11) and is currently tied for second on the Ford Trophy one-day wicket-taking table (12 at 11.91), boosted by his hat-trick against Wellington last month..

I think he has really come on in the last 18 months so the stats are moving in the right direction.

Have you seen anything of him Chris? Firta I heard of him was on news, and surely don't claim to enough about cricket to tell if he is good. Looked a little awkward batting being so tall, not sure if it makes difference or anything?
You the cricket man here, so up to you to advise if you don't mind me asking.

A little bit when I was back in NZ ,
Worth a punt as Nz need big tall quicks in my opinion.
Can find the boundary down the lower order if needed.
I like the idea of trying another Jamieson type player. And we lack true allrounders of international quality in NZ .

Not an exclusively NZ problem, Mitchell Starc is rated 5th in the world at test level somehow ?!?!

I do wish Neesham and/or Anderson did the business at test level, both had real potential.

The ratings are ridiculous. Littered with batsmen who produce a good bowling performance once in a blue moon and bowlers who bat ok here and there. Fuck all genuine stars of both disciplines.

Australia have a few allrounders Cameron Green fits well into the AR catergory .
Glen Maxwell in the short form is another.
Ashton Agar can bat in the short form is another.
And a lot playing first class just no gaps in the test side.

Lack of quality allrounders at test level is a problem world wide.
The country who develops a couple have a big advantage in balancing their side.
So anytime NZ are trying someone I am glad they are having a punt.

Cameron Green has potential but hasn’t really delivered yet. Still plenty of time and I suspect he will.

It’s a good thing Agar shows talent as a batsman cos as a bowler he makes Mitch Santner look like Shane Warne.

The shorter forms of the game have loads of all rounder types who are found wanting in the longer forms. That’s nothing new.

The shorter forms of the game have loads of all rounder types who are found wanting in the longer forms. That’s nothing new.

Green is the one who will kick on to be a serious allrounder he is young still.
Brilliant in the gully as well.
Takes time for young allrounders to get to a real quality level.
The problem is most young players here in Australia who have the potential in both disciplines steer towards batting due to 20/20s no young players want go get pumped as it’s bad for further rep selection.
Their attitude is best to pour hours in to batting.
The work I do in the Qld state rep
    u/19 and U/17 space
Sees not many true allrounders any more ,
Good bats who can roll their arm over or genuine bowlers who can add a few runs down the order.
An add on to that parents are inclined to steer the players that way,A lot competition for Rep slots here, always have to look good,
you never know who is watching attitude.

Not sure if there's a more recent thread, but good news I think?

One of my favourite one day players, totally of his time... But got very conservative as a selector. Thanks for the contribution and all the best. Interesting to see who will step up

The Black Caps will see another longstanding contributor to their side depart with selector Gavin Larsen stepping down from his position to take up a role in the UK.

Sums it up really well. The word is that he pushed for De Grandhomme when he made the test team and that was certainly a good call that worked surprising well.

How did New Zealand fall so steeply from being champions in the last cycle to rank eighth in the current one? Here are the key numbers comparing their previous campaign to this entirely forgettable one.

They'll have to find a new bowling coach soon as Shane Jurgensen steps down to be the Wellington head coach.

I told the missus last night I get to spend an entire week at the Basin watching us play Australia, after listing off the dates she informed me that I'll be at a wedding in Wanaka for the entire bloody thing. I'm gutted.

    Sad news, this.

Instinct says they probably struggled to find a decent candidate wanting to take over a team on the edge of such a huge age and talent cliff.

    Well, lost to UAE overnight.

Underdone, pointless T20 overseas. Presumably it's a coffer filling exercise. Chapman played well, but sounds like atrocious fielding cost us.

    Ugh.
