I'm the same, 3 around the sides 5 on top. Let it grow for about 3 months then rinse and repeat. I can't even remember what I pay, $20 I think. 
We just got my boy his first hair cut at 3 1/2. He had a massive curly afro and it was getting bloody difficult to manage, turned into a tangled mess within a day or so. Short hair is 100% the way to go, and people don't say "oh your daughter is so cute" anymore.

I go for the bald fade, line and comb back. I dont have traditional islander hair and have been told on more than one occasion its a cÅ¯nt to cut. 
I pay $40 but my do so sharp i can slice bread with it...

A Samoan mate of mine won't grow an afro no matter how hard we try and persuade him and his hair never gets wet even when it's wet.

I go to a place on ponsonby Rd. Was there as recently as last Saturday. Fantastic deal. 6 chairs and a maitre de They play soul music and sing and dance along with it as they cut yr hair. And they actually sound good. Jive Talking by bee gees ( yeah not soul but was exception ). Came on and at the point John Travolta wud fire one hand in the air all the barbers stopped and hit their blades with their combs. Fantastic 
The maitre d' cracks jokes. Seriously it's a concert while yr hair is cut. 
$30 for a ponsonby hipster cut ðŸ™„

Used to do that , got the mrs to cut it but she tired of it so I went back to the barber. They are always good for a chat at least, I like the old school barbers. Except that woman on the highway in Paraparaumu, she's certifiable .

You should also factor in the power to run your hairdryer and the extra towel you wrap around your wet hair when you get out of the shower.

If I get a neck wax which I don't really need as I'm not very hirsute, it's an extra $30.
 
I recommend the neck wax though as it takes ages to grow back
