    @antipodean

    From the looks of it you’re gonna hate the remake…

    @Catogrande it would be an astonishing achievement for it to be worse.

    Same height but at least he has the credibility of an actual fighter, not someone who did ballet at school. Hopefully no actual lines though.

    Saltburn. Not worth the hype. Beautifully shot and great sound - but that's about it.

    ok, saw Dune on the weekend...was great, had a weird experience, about half way through thinking (because i knew everything that still had to happen) that it had dragged....but then realised i was completely engrossed....so not bored....they had actually just dont a great job showing a decent amount of time had passed without having a really blatant montage....maybe with a calendar pages being torn off....i havent explained that well

    CGI was perfect i think...and the slow transformation of paul was very well done

    @booboo said in Movie review thread...:

    if I recall the book correctly it was more about Paul's struggle not to instigate the Holy war. I suppose in retrospect it was there, but not overt.
    ||

    do you mean the book had more of his struggle or the movie?....i felt if anything they labored the idea he was trying to avoid a holy war....like, i think there was one or two too many dream flashbacks too him following his mother through the desert with all the people dying beside them....much more obvious than i remember from the book

    anyway...im sure there will be another....but god i hope/wish there wasn't...i think going into an interstellar war will just become unwieldy...as they are these two films can sit there as one of the best series in film, the cliff hanger after he has just lead an army so such an easy victory over the emperor and the harkonnens...might be just me but i walked out just thinking...."and he proceeded to burn a swaith across the galaxy"

    Then I may wait decades to watch that one too. Hopefully die beforehand.

    American Fiction

    I enjoyed this, recognising some of the characters in it. Not having read the book it's based on, I was hoping that there'd be some element of difficulty for the writer to contend with once the truth came out but I can see why they went with the ending they did. It just seemed a little flat and missing the opportunity to make it uncomfortable for all concerned.

    This was good. Really enjoyed this

    Tried to watch "Poor things". Self indulgent arty bullshit, that unless you're tarred with the "I have to watch everything" label, then just don't. If Tropic Thunder taught me anything, you never go full retard. She goes so close.. Obviously not full enough for people who stick plastic golden statues up themselves, but for the mainstream forget it.

    Speaking of which, Barbie over hyped fun movie that although clever and well written should not have be considered Oscar worthy, unless of course you are just pushing agendas.

    Oppenheimer - its not all doom and gloom, just boom with this one. Watch if you haven't already.

    I liked Poor Things but no way she should have won, as I noted in my post above. Maestro is my don't bother watching from the list.

    Barbie was great, one of the best movies I saw last year, in all honesty it seems to me that suggesting others shouldn't consider it Oscar worthy seems like the actual pushing of agendas.

    Jaws
    Yeah hasn't aged well. Kind of freaked me out that Roy Schneider was younger than I am now when he played that role. The 3 mains are great in their roles and the music is still awesome but fark me that shark looks terrible (except for that scene where it eats that scout dude, that's cool).

    @Nepia lol its ok for you to like Poor Things, you are a true cinephile (certainly not for me), even the music irked me.

    Unless you were in a coma, you could not have missed Barbie mania and the global media hype that came with it I know lots of people who did love it and good for them. With hype so big, there is always an expectation that the movie delivers on that, that is where there is a gap. My wife and I both enjoyed it but neither thought it was a truly great movie.

    Again, it's a good movie, never said it wasn't. In terms of relevant for Oscars, given its popularity it was always going to be there, where I joined the cult or not. Also helped by the fact that there were very few unique new mainstream movies released and likely to happen this year too. Fun, but not wow. So I maintain, don't believe the hype.

    I don’t think the shark looks as bad as some people make out and I certainly appreciate the ‘less is more’ approach to create tension . Shaw is amazing in the role as are the other two. I don’t think a film franchise has deteriorated as badly as that though, the later movies are absolutely awful.

    King of Killers

    Ah yeah, just leave your brain at the door with this one.

    In fact skip it altogether…..

    Ridiculous plot, boring overchoreographed fight scenes and the acting is more wooden than a lumber yard.

    Not even any funny one liners, the ONLY saving grace was the main bad guy being vaguely interesting.

    Avoid.

    Paul Schrader has a new movie coming out soon. Based upon Russell Banks' last novel (The Sweet Hereafter, Affliction). About a respected leftwing documentary maker who is actually a huge piece of shit. Richard Gere and Uma Therman

    @Catogrande Very clever, I assume that you will appear on a panel show soon.

    Though he could be pretty good at portraying an ageing man who has gotten by because of his charm and looks ...
