If I am making a classic old fashioned, I often blend a bit of makers mark with a Basil Haydens.

Basil Haydens very smooth and nice on its own

@broughie had the Wild Turkey Rare Breed also, which is cask strength I think, was ok, but I'd take the Longbranch one over it, although I think might be the only WT one I like (neat or with ice/water)

@bovidae try Makers 46. I think a step up from Makers Mark.

I've tried that before, and the Private Selection. When I lived in the US the local supermarket had a huge selection of bourbon so you were spoilt for choice. I'd hate to know what these higher quality bourbons cost to buy in NZ. Duty free had its advantages.

@billy-tell everyone hates Jim Beam and Jack Daniels. It’s the bottom of the barrel stuff.

Speak for yourself. Jim Beam White I understand - it's fairly shite - but the nicer Jim Beams are fine, and standard JDs is fine, while Gentleman Jack rivals your Woodfords/Makers Mark/Longbranches.

It's a matter of taste, but there's many worse bourbons to hate on.

Jim Beam White is better than Jim Beam Black, which is supposed to be better

@bovidae Makers 46 goes for about 26 bucks at Sam’s Club over here and I don’t know what the exchange rate is. I bought the wild turkey longbranch Duty free for close to 50 bucks in Aruba as all alcohol is expensive in that little island.

@broughie looks like it (Makers 46) varies from $57 to $79 in NZ for a 700ml

@delicatessen I haven’t tried J D’s high-end stuff so it might be good. That’s one thing the boys want to do is a whiskey tour in Kentucky/Tennessee.

@broughie It will be double the price, even allowing for the exchange rate. The standard 1L Maker's Mark is $60 (US$42).

The only time I ever went to Sam's Club was to buy a leg of NZ lamb to cook for the flatmates.

@bovidae I brought some lamb chops recently but as much as I like a leg of lamb my children have nothing to do with it :-).

    Look what you've started @Billy-Tell

Hope you give it a go and will be interested in what you think. FYI, up until December 2015 I thought exactly the same as you did. Til an American mate brought some Makers Mark on a holiday.

Yep, Maker's Mark really is the dogs nuts. Generally prefer Scotch or Japanese, but it would be hard to pass up a Maker's regardless of what the other choices are

Edit: I am also currently enjoying some Buffalo Trace, having bought a bottle after hearing Joe Rogan was lyrical about it and then seeing a bottle on sale - not bad and definitely more Maker's Mark than Jim Beam

Nah its Tennessee whiskey. Similar enough though, just slightly different filtering processes.

I'm an occasional scotch drinker, and I've never bought a bourbon in my life other than Aldi brand one for cocktails. Just got a bottle of Maker's Mark last night on your recommendations, and I have to say it's very nice. Wasn't expecting that at the price.

@victor-meldrew If you enjoyed that, there are two others worth considering...

Gentleman Jack and Jack Silver Select.

    Cheers
