@no-quarter There's a growing middle class, but no long term plan. Everyone is conditioned to grabbing what they can while it's available. Makes doing business even harder now because more people are taking the piss.
Easier to count the countries in the world where this is not the case. Leaders will get away with as much as the populace will stand, the trick is balancing the riches vs blowback.
But yeah, there are some absolutely amazing people amongst the down trodden, well that's been my experience in "developing " countries

We gave the PNG govt $15 mill , but you guys gave $100 mill, they spent it wisely . By wisely I mean how I would have spent it -incredibly unwisely
The wife has family over there that work as teachers, they often get paid late or not at all. This would be why. The PNG government is a fucking joke.
I lived in PNG for a short while, but my parents lived there for more than a decade. They were there before and after independence in 1975. On independence day, locals kept coming up to them and asking about what was meant by all this talk of "underpants". They had no idea and didn't give a shit. Was way too early. Another UN success story đź‘Ť
-
I got asked, more than once, when the Aussies were coming back. Not something you expect to hear, but the older folk thought things were better pre-independence. The Tapini ball must have been a right gin and tonic festival (not for the locals obviously). Also the only place that I have been shot at - but I have yet to meet some of you.

Foley resigns . What a creep
He's a fucking dull-looking fluffybunny who somehow morphed into a creep.
Politics in Australia generally, but NSW particularly, is a cripple fight. Foley versus Berej... versys Gladys was the battle of who could fail least, after glamour boy Mike Baird walked back into the private sector for big money and Christian values.
Morrison versus Shorten at Federal level.

I'm no fan of Baird, in fact I hate his guts, but wasn't a very sick close family member one of the reasons for him stepping down?
Btw, how did this get out in the first place? How did that Liberal dude first become aware of it?

@nta too soon to joke about the victims surname?
Was my initial reaction as well. Bloody hell.

His sister had cancer, yes.
Also the Foley incident was an open secret within NSW Parliament circles, though nobody knew 100% exactly what happened. There were a few witnesses there on the night, and the quiet buzz was getting louder as he seemed to move closer to becoming Premier.

So the victim timed her payback for maximum damage ? Well done that woman.
-
@jegga I wouldn't say this was at all deliberate. I wonder if she would have ever spoken if it wasn't raised in Parliament first.
If she wanted to do maximum damage, she would have waited 3 months until the election campaign began.
Now, Labor have time to select a new leader and right the ship (somewhat) before March.

Gees reading the statement is interesting. This Foley creep went up behind her put his hand through a slit in her dress and then into her underwear cupping a cheek all in full view of her friend and fellow ABC reporter Scott something. Neither her or Scott said anything to Foley, he left and then she told Scott not to say anything to anyone.
Can you imagine working in such an industry where you just accept sexual abuse as part of climbing the career ladder or even worse where you'll watch a friend of yours getting assaulted while you just stand there like a fucken chump too scared to hurt your own career?
Reporters should report. It's disgusting all round. The older I get the more I realise there are two types of people in this world, those with principles and those without.
-
@rembrandt I wonder if it's people who want harm on anyone who's made a better life than them vs people who just think, meh, up to them to live how they want.
That best explains toxic masculinity and white privilege hysteria
Until a strong social more is abused, then it's a criminal affair as stipulated and codified by societal law.
Edit, been listening to Peterson asking toxic masculinity and oppressive patriarchy proponents what they actually mean - no coherent answers given yet

I disagree it's 'disgusting all round'. He is the only one who is 'disgusting' here. And are you saying she doesn't have principles? Jesus.
I've never been in her position, and thus I don't think I can fully grasp the choices she had at her disposal in that moment and in the immediate aftermath.
Either way, in revealling what happened she now sees her name/face/story on the front page of every paper, AND has been called a liar and looks like she might be sued.
Given that reaction, I can 100% see why she took the decision to remain silent and just get on with her life.

I'm not sure that career has ever been mentioned.
"I didn't say anything because I didn't want to destroy my fucking life over it" is probably closer to the truth, as @barbarian implies above.
-
Did these two have any past history? The Labor party and the ABC are pretty close. Although actually the ABC are ridiculousy overrepresented by Greens voters.
Will be interesting to see if he brings a defamation case. If there were so many witnesses then he's well and truly farked.

I should have been a little clearer in my wording. By 'disgusting all around' I mean the action and the kind of industry that this sort of thing is tolerated. Certainly if you are the one being touched up that is a very lonely place if your industry tolerates it and doesn't like to 'rock the boat'. She does say in her statement part of the reason for keeping quiet was because of her career, she was likely 100% correct there too hence why its so disgusting, as too her male colleagues reaction watching the offence, could you sit by and watch that without doing anything? Only he knows why he didn't immediately react for sure but it's not a hard argument to make that its for fear of harming his own career. This reeks like the whole Hollywood Weinstein situation.
-
@rembrandt I'm not sure it's got anything to do with that industry. I think it's across the board - a powerful man abusing a woman at the start of her career. Happens everywhere. It naturally throws up a million questions in the mind of the woman, and any witnesses.
In this case, it appears the one witness was a close friend of the woman, and he respected her wishes not to push it further. That's a tough spot to be in.
To me it's not Weinstein. She didn't complain, nothing was 'covered up'. Everything was done per her wishes. It's a bit different to the Hollywood culture where this stuff was hushed up and victims paid off etc.
