Any thoughts on how to lock porn out of a device? Particularly anything for school, as currently my wife's nephew (15) basically can't be given anything with internet access. Not a lot of money in his mother's budget, so it will have to be cheap.

It's called a calculator. It's simply not possible to prevent a teenager from finding porn on an internet connected device.

We've found familyzone useful for younger kids, which we get for free from the school.

But as said above, a motivated teenager will get around any restrictions. Or just look on his friends devices.

I spent a few hours trying to lock down the boy's Macbook but knew that, once I got it to the point where his mother was bamboozled by tech terms, that was enough.

As long as they're not installing malware... that's about the best you can hope for.

(Pornhub Premium is free right now... I've heard 😎 )

I thought that might be the case... Can't even buy a dumb phone any more (in his mother's price range).

If his school gave him a device, would they be able to lock it?

It is technically possible for the OS to be locked down and accessible to only the school network, preventing additional apps or access outside of a controlled environment. But I sincerely doubt schools have that level of capability.

It tends to takes years to provide that capability for billion dollar organisations.

The schools get it to a point, then youtube gives step by step instructions on how to bypass whatever they put in place.

    It's whack a mole.

At 15, all you can do is have a frank conversation about what to avoid with porn, the downsides of it, and the aspects that are unrealistic and damaging, then wait for him to grow out of masterbating when he's 80 or something.

His mother is incapable of viewing him as anything other than a child, so that's unlikely - I've already told her that and she didn't like that idea... She's paranoid that he will meet people off the internet and get murdered (never mind that she was active on NZ dating for years), so her current solution is no devices. I'm sure he was active online at school when it was open, but for now, schooling will have to wait till school is open again.

Probably more a dad conversation anyway, or if he's not on the scene a really uncomfortable uncle conversation?

We shipped him off to his father's place for the lockdown, so they've no doubt bonded a bit (prior interaction had been erratic, but it wasn't no interaction), so maybe they'll have that conversation if we're lucky.

My son's 13 later in the year, so this a nice look into my future.

We found Qustodio to be user friendly, but the lad was only 10 so not trying to circumvent it. His school disabled the app for their own software about 18mths ago

Yeah that's about the time his Mum busts him looking at the most basic nude ladies on the web and freaks out about it 😉

My conversation with the boy EDIT: around 12-13 (he's about to turn 16) was much like to you say: understand that porn is highly unrealistic - curse that fact 😉 but then move on. Also as long as he understands there is nothing wrong with galloping the lizard despite the stigma attached to it.

My final advice to him was: "Back in my day, we had to hide the magazines. Nowadays you need to hide your browser history. CTRL+SHIFT+N. All I'm saying"

Common problem. Women raise children. Men raise adults.

Humble brag about doing it better than most?

It's all really too easy when you can simply go to Google, then Images and type "nude" or "nude video" and hundreds of thousands of images and videos are available.

And you can't realistically stop anyone from using Google as it is such a key tool.

Years ago I started a topic re how to access a crashed 'mywinlocker' app. Tried a couple of things, to no avail. Any tech-heads got any ideas?

    Hmmm. I might try that.

Do be careful what you type before the word nude though. You may get some nasty surprises

Hi guys. I currently use a couple of basic TP link 2.4Ghz access points in my house. They are plugged into hardwire sockets but I'm looking for more speed and dual band so I'm looking at this, it is 3x faster than my existing ones and has 5Ghz band.

    https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NAPTPL0225/TP-Link-Omada-EAP225-MU-MIMO-Dual-Band-AC1350-4508

I just want to switch it in for one of the existing APs with minimal fuss, don't want to screw up my current basic setup. Will this achieve that? Churs in advance
