Beer thread

Bloody thread got me going on the Wheat Beers this weekend.

Although I mentioned it above from memory I hadn't had an Emerson's Weissbier for quite a while so that was the Friday night treat. Can confirm that it's a fine drop. Unfiltered but not too cloudy (so not too yeasty), has the right refreshing spice notes and has avoided being too fruity. A Hoegaarden that's a little clearer and less 'orange' flavour.

I picked up a pack of those 'Crafty Beggars' (Which is a bandwagon brand from Lion). I have nothing against the big breweries getting on board, just get a little peeved when they try and hide their involvement, why not just be upfront? If they can make something that tastes good at a price I can afford the all good.
I thought the Wheat Beer was refreshing but very light in flavour (I guess they have to cut costs somewhere). Certainly worth picking up to drink ice cold at an afternoon BBQ though as the alc content is not high. -
I liked that it was only 4%, which IMO was what helped the lighter flavour...

As to being a Lion Brand, as you say, they should really say it, as hiding will make the beer snobs even more enraged I personally thought it was a nice fresh drop, it may be some time before I pick up this 6 pack again (more through the fact I like to try something new when Isee it than anything to do with Lion being involved) -
Beer snobs crack me up. If you equate it to wine it would mean that only $100+ bottles should ever be made.

$10+ beers are a luxury and damn good value for money but you'd have to be loaded to drink only craft beer (or not actually drink that much). At least with the cheaper options out there you can still try something different and occasionally find an OK drop at a reasonable price. Not all of it is good, but the odd few of them are ok. They are often a step ahead of the dumbed down flavours in Macs and Monteiths and street ahead of your bog standard big brewery fare.

I'll leave the real craft jobs for the special treat thanks. -

Yeah, I love good craft beer, but it's just too expensive to drink every time.
I drink bigger all, but when I buy beer, I buy decent stuff to enjoy and may only have 2 in a sitting. I'd rarely get through a dozen in a fortnight (although I have had about a months worth in the last 24 hours)

... [I hit send too early on this before]

Craft is great is you want to enjoy a beer. But it's just too damned expensive to drink any other time. I still have to go for my $15-20 doz beers for the usual session.

In saying that, I can't really stomach drinking Tui/Speights etc now unless the situation means I have no other drinking choice (sports matches, someone else's place providing beer etc).

On that note, had some Tui blond at the Phoenix game the other week. Geez that's insipid piss water. -
I drink craft almost exclusively. Its like wine. It's hard to go back to the cheaper stuff once you develop a taste.

I also quite like that it makes me drink less.

Having said that every Dec my bro arrives for a month and he loves a beer every night and only at the pub. His bar of choice think Speights is exotic -

Any Suggestions for white/wheat beer? Just had a Flensburger Weizen and it was quite nice. Def enjoy Hoegaarden but haven't been sold on some NZ boutique wheat beers - too many flavours like Banana and liquorice being added!

Macs Great White bro, really good drop. TR is dead right about Erdinger too but always nice when you pay with the company credit card rather than $60 of your own money for a round of five of the fuckers !

I've been good with my drinking or lack there of but have had a few over the break. Currently Boundary Road are fulfilling all my beer needs and then some. Their "Sticky Wicket" Golden lager is particularly awesome. Manuka honey flavoured, delicious !

They also do the staple beers as good or better than any on the market, Macs and Monteiths better watch their asses cos at $11.99 a half doz for what is in my opinion a fine selection of drops they are gonna shift some serious units I'd imagine. I've never seen "Wheat Reaper" on the shelf but looks like it'll fulfil Paeks's needs !
Fark, $60 for 5 of 'em!!

Last time I bought some (early last year) they were $8 for a long Erdinger glass of it (500ml?)

Wife bought me a Moa St Josephs over Christmas, 9.5% alcohol, didnt taste that high, more just like one of the real hoppy beers I've had. -

Wellington bar prices homes, smalltown boys like you should be pleased ! -

Chur lads, will check those out. Been cranking Asahi at the moment. Doz for $24 which is far cheaper than the usual $16-17 for a half doz... hope they aren't made with radioactive ingredients!
Another for the Wheat Beer tryout is Sawmill Crystal Wheat.
Just had one after a couple of days fishing and crushing in the Bay of Islands on a mates old Kauri launch.
Not sure if it was the situation of the beer but it was good.
I tried that a while back. Wasn't overly impressed with it.

Tried Wigram Brewing Company's Hefe Weizen beer this evening. One of the best NZ brewed wheat beers I've tried.
Sounds like you've had a great trip!

That is a decent drop, but not one of the better ones from the Sawmill Brewery IIRC.... -
Well, I was home in NZ last couple of weeks so tried a few things out. I can confirm after spending trying about 4 diff boutique beers (Moa is the only one I can remember the name of), that the best beer I had was a handle of Waikato at Molly's in Te Puke.

You can never take the bogan out of the boy. -
