Fortunately, not the same for NZ peak wine, the Marlborough SB. Canāt go wrong with Villa Maria, especially at 7.99 from Costco.
Have to say, not one of my favourites. I find it too sharp for my palate.

Kiwi Pinot Noir is a case in point, much of what is available over here is very strongly fruit driven and raspberryish. I got given a bottle of Valli PN though and what a difference. Lovely drop.
I don't like PN from Marlborough, which is very light and fruity. Some of the central Otago stuff is good but are often fruitier than the French stuff. If you want more complex leaner PN I'd go for Martinborough, or even better go for Waipara (one of my favs). Pegasus Bay is a fine example

You could always get something decent in for your guests and just add some lemon juice in yours?

Do. Almost a cross between Chablis and New World. It's oaked and rich but not like some Oz Chardonnays which are like sucking a plank of wood.

You could be onto something. I've found NZ Pinot Noir def. needs a year or two storage before they taste like they should. An expensive Otago PN was really disappointing but 15 months later, stunning.

There is a Majestic store near wear I live funnily enough, quite a big one, not sure if they are open at the moment. I'm really not a huge wine drinker, so never ventured in there, can you taste them? Lol
I think I'm going to suggest a wine tasting session next time someone asks me what I want for my birthday.
I think I'm at an age where I should get to know wine, in moderation though. -
@victor-meldrew NZ wines seldom are allowed to develop. During lockdown last year I worked my way though plenty of Otago PN from the early years of this century that were borderline magnificent but the common opinion is that they would be vinegar by now.
Equally true of the top HB and Waiheke Cabernets

That's definitely not a "thing"...
You should do the tasting thing just to get a sense for what you like. The right wine is the one you like, not the one the experts say you should like. You'll never know what that is unless you give them a go.
We have lots of wineries around where I live and one of the most surprising things is how down to earth the winemakers are. Not up themselves at all, they're not wine snobs they just love making wine.

I like that. I really don't buy wines for the reason that there is so much variety,. Prefer to trust other people's suggestions, and give them a try and add it to my list if i like it.
Whites - I know i like SB and Chilean in particular but maybe I need to try a better quality Nz.
Reds- I know i like Chiraz.
I drank too much RosƩ one night about 10yrs ago and haven't touched it since. Even the smell of it makes me gag. -

Got absolutely smashed on that a few years ago at Bardeaux in Queenstown. Great bar introduced to me by @Canerbry about 15 years ago, and a lovely wine, albeit a bit too moorish.

I think that we covered over coming gag reflexes in the sausage thread (actually it might not really be a sausage thread). Drinking more wine may be a solution but who knows?
