What are you listening to, right now................
Is that the criterion for being "big"? House wives own your CD?
For me, yeah, household name-recognition with my friends' housewives equals smash-hit, 'cos by-and-large those housewives don't follow music. (Then again, the housewives are also humming Arcade Fire this season, so I guess that confirms them as officially huge now, too.) Rare to go without a tv commercial break up here the past few months and miss the regular Chevrolet spots w/ Monae's "Tightrope" in constant rotation. -
I saw the Smashing Pumpkins when the came here in 2008. It was one of the most disappointing concerts I've ever been to. Their set list was crap, and they really didn't seem that in to it. However, Queens of the Stone Age opened for them, and they were fantastic. (setlist FYI)
I was at that show in Wellington, I agree with everything you said. My wife used to quite like the Smashing Pumpkins, now she avoids listening to them.

I was into the Queens of the Stone Age a while ago, and was disappointed that they started on time (7pm) while we were waiting in a queue to get in.

[Edit]
Although looking at that setlist we only missed half of the first song. Billy Corgan also made the crowd sing happy birthday, then wasn't happy with us, so made us sing again. If we had known that he was done for the night I doubt anyone would have bothered. -
I saw them both at the V Festival on the same tour. Festival sets are obviously shorter, but i thought the Pumpkins were pretty good. Slightly shorter version of that list, Porcelina and Hummer were excellent inclusions i thought. It does help that i liked their latest album i guess. QOTSA were fucking brilliant that night though.

The Pumpkins' show at the Supertop in '96 ranks as the second best concert of my life. Long, and so so good. -
Some random stuff I have been listening too of late. Alot of it is old favs but worth sharing.
A couple of guano apes tracks
Guano Apes, I really like their music. I didn't think they ever made it anywhere in NZ though right? Being a German band, I got to know of them quite well when I was there in 2001.

Another couple....

and also this one, Sandra Nasić (their lead singer) sings with Finnish cello band Apocalyptica.

Apocalyptica are a really fun band. They even did an album of Metallica covers
I think I'm going to pay the piper and see Rammstein live. Not crazy about their records, but love I their vids and spectacular concert dvds. True performance artists in the best traditions of the German expressionists - and they rock, too.

On that topic I saw a post on facebook the other day from one of my son's mates..."Just waiting for my fich and chips and saw a guy blow his nose on his hoodie. Upper Hutt producing the world's finest citizens"
