What's happened to Waikato Rugby?

There's zero connection between the Chiefs and Waikato. And central contracting bought the Chiefs two titles while fucking Waikato in the shitter.
Yes, we had this discussion.
I wouldn't say that there is zero connection. Chiefs have connections with BOP, Waikato, Naki and CM to manage. Just because the main base is in Hamilton doesn't mean that they should be bolstering Waikato as a province any more than the other partners.
We get that the situation is vastly different with the Crusaders as they feed off (and contribute back to) Canterbury as their priority and Ta$man as an adjunct. -

2016 u19’s champs
2017 u19’s runners upNowadays NPC teams are players in their early 20’s plus a handful of veterans. You would expect the u19 results to be translating into an ok NPC side
As long as these young players don't suddenly find a 'free' education at Lincoln dangled under their noses

@crucial They already have free education at Waikato Uni...
Not everybody wants a degree in milking cows.
Bit rich flagging Waikato as rural when the alternative is .... Lincoln!

Even richer if I was to admit I went to high school in Taranaki, and uni at Massey.
But I would never admit that. -
I think part of the issue is the massive debt the WRU still has which dates back to the Super Rugby contracting switch. This limits the ability to contract players thus it becomes a recruitment and retention problem. It also limits the investments the WRU can make in other areas
I am not sure Jono Gibbes is a poor coach....he's probably not working with the best cattle.
Both Roger Randle and Nathan White have coached on the club scene....so there seems to be a pathway there.
There has to be something wrong there though. This is now getting really embarrassing. I wish I knew how to fix it.
I couldn't watch the second half last night.

It seems Waikato has been turning around it's financial performance in the last couple of years. However as you mentioned they've had to squeeze in some important areas
This from the Deloitte report:
Waikato had the greatest decrease in growing the game expenditure, dropping $0.3m from FY16. Reviewing Waikato’s financials it is reasonable to determine that the union needed to secure its own financial position before investing back into the community, which demonstrates the tough decisions our game’s treasurers have
There's a thread on the Deloitte report here https://www.forum.thesilverfern.com/topic/2542/deloitte-state-of-unions-report

@duluth I had heard (unsubstantiated) that Waikato senior rugby is struggling for numbers in terms of putting out Seniors and Reserves week in week out. Now I know most Unions have this issue and I discussed it in the last round of our club season, but from what I have heard is the Waikato Union is at one of its lowest points...which is a viscious circle.

The historical debt was in excess of $1M, a lot of which was owed to the HCC for rental of Waikato Stadium.

I lasted 60 mins.

Tough draw coming up for Waikato. Two games against first division teams with a quick turnaround
vs Wellington (Hamilton) on Wednesday
vs Taranaki (New Plymouth) four days laterThen another four day turnaround and they have Hawkes Bay in Hamilton
That smells of Hawkes Bay getting the Shield then.....
