What's happened to Waikato Rugby?
-
I think that's 10 consecutive competition game losses now?
Is it poor coaching, poor recruiting, a bad organisation, or a combination of all three?
I think someone here mentioned that the best club coaches are ignored for Mitre 10 Cup jobs?
-
They probably don't develop enough good local players. Their best players over the last few years have been recruited from outside the Waikato, like DMac, ALB, Weber, Halaholo, Manihera and Stevenson. Most of those guys aren't there now.
-
There's zero connection between the Chiefs and Waikato. And central contracting bought the Chiefs two titles while fucking Waikato in the shitter.
-
By the way, I started a thread on the same topic maybe a year ago.

Yes, we had this discussion.
I wouldn't say that there is zero connection. Chiefs have connections with BOP, Waikato, Naki and CM to manage. Just because the main base is in Hamilton doesn't mean that they should be bolstering Waikato as a province any more than the other partners.
We get that the situation is vastly different with the Crusaders as they feed off (and contribute back to) Canterbury as their priority and Tasman as an adjunct. -
2016 u19’s champs
2017 u19’s runners upNowadays NPC teams are players in their early 20’s plus a handful of veterans. You would expect the u19 results to be translating into an ok NPC side

As long as these young players don't suddenly find a 'free' education at Lincoln dangled under their noses
-
@crucial They already have free education at Waikato Uni...

Bit rich flagging Waikato as rural when the alternative is .... Lincoln!

Even richer if I was to admit I went to high school in Taranaki, and uni at Massey.
But I would never admit that. -
I think part of the issue is the massive debt the WRU still has which dates back to the Super Rugby contracting switch. This limits the ability to contract players thus it becomes a recruitment and retention problem. It also limits the investments the WRU can make in other areas
I am not sure Jono Gibbes is a poor coach....he's probably not working with the best cattle.
Both Roger Randle and Nathan White have coached on the club scene....so there seems to be a pathway there.
There has to be something wrong there though. This is now getting really embarrassing. I wish I knew how to fix it.
I couldn't watch the second half last night.

It seems Waikato has been turning around it's financial performance in the last couple of years. However as you mentioned they've had to squeeze in some important areas
This from the Deloitte report:
Waikato had the greatest decrease in growing the game expenditure, dropping $0.3m from FY16. Reviewing Waikato’s financials it is reasonable to determine that the union needed to secure its own financial position before investing back into the community, which demonstrates the tough decisions our game’s treasurers have
There's a thread on the Deloitte report here https://www.forum.thesilverfern.com/topic/2542/deloitte-state-of-unions-report

@duluth I had heard (unsubstantiated) that Waikato senior rugby is struggling for numbers in terms of putting out Seniors and Reserves week in week out. Now I know most Unions have this issue and I discussed it in the last round of our club season, but from what I have heard is the Waikato Union is at one of its lowest points...which is a viscious circle.

The historical debt was in excess of $1M, a lot of which was owed to the HCC for rental of Waikato Stadium.
I couldn't watch the second half last night.
I lasted 60 mins.

Tough draw coming up for Waikato. Two games against first division teams with a quick turnaround
vs Wellington (Hamilton) on Wednesday
vs Taranaki (New Plymouth) four days laterThen another four day turnaround and they have Hawkes Bay in Hamilton

That smells of Hawkes Bay getting the Shield then.....

Waikato can just write this year off no matter what. Gibbes didn't want to be there in the first place and is only there a year! Solid management there thinking he would do a good job!!!

haha, love the optimism and pessimism all in one small post!

Chiefs suck.

Don't know why that made me laugh but it did.

The last time Waikato went to New Plymouth for a RS challenge we had absolutely no expectations and won it!
I'd just settle for a win regardless who the opposition is.

Was supposed to be like the "you can do it!" guy
-
The bench hooker for Waikato, have you seen the state of him?
There are some horrible hair do’s in the NPC, but this guy wins that competition by a considerable margin.
In fact he might be one of the extras from the pub scene in One Were Warriors. -
Looks like this was the thread to get Waikato rugby back on track.
-
@african-monkey Not if you're looking for anything but total apathy from their supporters!
-
I've just got back from the game. How's that for apathy?
-
What's happened to Waikato Rugby?
Well, they won back the Ranfurly Shield from the Naki, then defended it against championship top of the table Hawkes Bay with a bonus point win.
The kids are all right.
-
Awesome. Very promising young centre pairing - Tupaea and Sweeney - where have these young bucks been hiding? And a rejuvenated Tucker and a deserved opportunity for Fletcher Smith to shine, along with Sevu Reece. Amazing!
-
@arhs Laghlan McWhannell looks to have a lot of potential as well.
-
He sure does - junior Brodie...
-
@arhs Everytime Reece had the ball you thought something was going to happen - good or bad.
Disappointing that he is going to Ireland as the AB 7s would be so much better with him and Koroi.

Am I being whooshed about young centre pairing, Dwayne Sweeney?
Last night was the first time I have watched Waikato, only saw about the last 30 minutes. I'll confidently declare that Quinn Tupaea has 'it'
BTW, where is Sullivan?.
-
@rapido said in What's happened to Waikato Rugby?:
BTW, where is Sullivan?.
He was subbed off by Dawai on the right wing in the 2nd half. Unfortunately none of the play went his way in the game and then Waikato had a set move from an attacking scrum and Sullivan dropped the ball.

this thread is comedy gold. the difference 10 days can make!
glad i didn't put my thoughts onto 'paper' after that Auckland performance...
