Rather than winning the public over, what about allowing your elderly inlaws probably too gone to travel themselves to see their grandchildren?
Why worry about winning the public over? She could hang out with Boris and enjoy a few Downing St parties

@booboo When I saw the official photo of he for her birthday I thought that they'd taken it with her horses so she can hold on to them and stand up.
After a lifetime of unstinting service to the UK and Commonwealth she doesn't want to be seen in a wheelchair. Fair enough too.
Also quite pertinent dressed in black - mourning Phillip?

Not a great one for Royal palaver, but fuck me, the Jubilee Parade was something else.
Some amazing costumes and dancing and the performers really having a ball. Amazing stuff.

It was superb

I generally don't give a shit about the Royal Institution, right up until some filthy peasant politician starts agitating to remove it. And then my question is; what with and why?

i think with nothing...because this largely/almost entirely symbolic...and because it costs a fortune...in saying that i dont mind the monarchy...maybe not the individuals other than queeny...but the idea of one definitely adds something

I thought that had been debunked, and it can be shown that the monarchy easily generates more economic activity than it costs? In true Fern fashion I haven't looked it up....

I really can't stand the soap opera aspects of it, but I think, constitutionally, it seems to work well.
Better someone who's spent his/her life meeting & understanding people from all walks of life than electing or appointing some professional politician

That and providing "soft" power globally. When the Queen visited Ireland a few years back, she generated more good-will and publicity than any number of politician's visits.
Also do a pretty good job in bringing together different parts of society and supporting often forgotten, but important, causes. There's loads of little things that Charles & his missus do in Cornwall, like supporting community-run village shops, which makes a big difference to people's lives.
