@Virgil We can't afford for it to be as bad as Europe - hence the draconian measures. We have less than 200 ICU beds in the whole country. Yes there are acute wards on top of that and hospitals are trying to make do in other ways but it won't take much to reach capacity. Hopefully there will be fewer road accident victims but people will still have other life threatening conditions that demand ICU so our ability to respond to any meaningful outbreak is severely constrained.

@dogmeat Any word if the Govt in NZ is fast tracking more ICU beds? I see the UK, Italy etc are building dedicated hospitals and upgrading hospitals.
Yes, in the interim operating theatres will be used as ICU beds if needed, and plans with private hospitals are underway e.g https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12317848

Forgive me if it's a booboo
Kinda ... saw somebody post the same message from WA Police

See a post from a friend on FB who had returned from Aus a week back, they had been called in to test, which they did this morning but can take Up to 5 days to get results.
They had been in self isolation and will continue until results come back, or if results back inside the 14 days they still have to stay at home even if negative.
So there is potentially a 5 day lag in our reporting of positive results.

Why were they called in? Did they have symptoms when they arrived?

Up to 39 cases now in NZ
A steady increase but no real spike in cases... yet

@taniwharugby interesting. I'm waiting for my call from the Gov to check in on me. I'd actually be pretty keen to be tested too.
Wonder how far away they are from having the means to test whether you've had it in the past (but not now)

Doubling every five days isn't it? That fits the pattern overseas, if it's 80 in five days it'll be in the hundreds soon after.

Well when you don't test people the official count doesn't go up! Science.

I'm no fan of this government, but they've gone OK with this. No major booboos I don't think. Not perfect, but not horrific either.
