Bridges should be concentrating solely on economy now. Totally support the govt in the fight against CV - all pull together in a time of crisis etc but who do you trust to get the economy going again? A party of school teachers and union reps or the friend of business? It his only chance.
Unfortunately he's all over the place. Some days he does this and others he gets all shrill and strident and tries to politicise the pandemic - totally misreading the mood of the electorate.
It's no surprise. He always has been a very limited (dumb) politician. He'd be gone already if National had any options - or any vainglorious enough to want to take on Cindy at the moment

I thought Bridges had some good questions in the House, but he got mauled by Jacinda, as did Duncan Garner when he asked similar questions.
I think it’s appalling that people suggest the leader of the opposition is acting improperly for asking questions of the government. For the Prime Minister to suggest it is inexcusable. Why doesn’t she address the questions? She’s committed us to tens of billions of dollars in spending, why does she think she owes no explanation? As for attacking a member of the press for asking questions.. she’s supposed to be a better person than the fuckwit Trump is she?

Yep, "barking at every passing car" is a cliche that can be thrown at any opposition politician, but it applies to Bridges far more than most. Long before the pandemic too.
The problem for National is that the current crisis (for now) plays strongly to both Jacinda's strengths and Simon's weaknesses.

@JC so quality of said questions doesn't come into it? I'm no Bridges fan but have been particularly frustrated by his (extra) poor performance. He's fielded some good questions and discussion as chair of the Covid committee but his other stuff has been a shambles. So there's an added layer of frustration that his own noise is cancelling out the limited good stuff he's doing.

@booboo she wasn't the one telling him that she had the answers. His hot take was "I've read and heard from overseas experts and others in NZ... why aren't we doing x, y, z?" Quite possible she's heard that a million times now from all and sundry. Doesn't mean she should be a dick about it though... hmm but she was talking to Garner soooooo
I think this edges me ahead of Kirwan for this years white knight standings

Hot take? Seems a perfectly reasonable way to ask a question. You're telling me he DIDN'T claim to be an epidemiologist.
Garner: Experts tell me this ...
Adern: Experts tell me that ... -
Like I said I think this hit a sore point of "Sigh, another round of interpretation of various experts' opinions" The hot take bit was just flippant
A key difference is Adern is supported by a team of experts - whereas the rest of us are dealing with expert opinion and research/stats etc as best we can, given whatever nous, skills, knowledge we bring to it. But that's me moving the goalposts!!
-
Ardern gets noticably iritable when her decisions get any pushback at all. It's is absolutely vital that journalists and the opposition examine every decision being made in this crisis because of the impact some of them will have.
She just has to put up with it.
Her annoyance is not as important as ensuring the right decisions get made, and if information changes that it's incorporated quickly into our response.

My line at work when training people, especially new staff, has been "the only stupid question is the one you thought of and didn't ask".
That said, it's not like this type of questioning is new, so maybe she's just over being asked it again by someone who should have read the previous answers to the same questions.
-
the worrying thing is, most of these 'journos' have likely gone into these with questions ready, menaing thye have thought about asking them, yet by god some of them ARE stupid.
Rather than there being stupid questions, I rather look at it in the sense that you dont know what you dont know, so you ask a question to learn...although I reckon in the case of media, it seems they are wanting a specific answer or trying to catch them off guard or are simply morons...

2 more cases - 1 confirmed with the Marist College cluster and 1 probable
1 further death, linked to the Burwood rest home. -

Nope. She can do and say what she wants. And she can point out when he’s talking crap, or have a go at him personally. But don’t suggest that even asking a question in wrong when she’s set aside a whole raft of civil liberties in a fashion that legal academics are now saying is questionable at the very least, when a judge has suggested the MOH has acted incorrectly, and her government has committed huge expenditure outside the normal budget process with proper scrutiny. It’s just not appropriate for a leader of any party to suggest that oversight is not just unnecessary but wrong.

Can't disagree with that, however I understood that the comment thrown at Bridges was not about oversight it was about him declaring 'you should do this, you should do that, I reckon it's all OK now'.
She is correct in saying that he has the luxury of making platitudes. It is just like us all selecting an AB team. We have no responsibility for the outcome so are free to opine.
Once again tough our opposition and media show that they aren't great at asking the relevant questions but quick on the draw for cheap points. -

I have a friend who told me the crown prosecutors' opinion is that the lockdown was in fact illegal. So while I agree it was a necessary evil, I don't think they should be acting like fluffybunnies about it and risking someone getting pissed off enough to test the legality in court
