Thought it might be appropriate after the RWC to bring up the conspiracy theory that was all the rage in 2011, i.e. Donald actually missed that kick!!!!! That one actually gained some serious traction.

There was a french poster who logged on here specifically to claim that. He was banned soon after. Like all his ilk he started his post with "first let me say the abs are my second favourite team after my own but......[insert nonsense as applicable here]."
-
Serious stuff here....

https://np.reddit.com/r/StarWars/comments/3qvj6w/theory_jar_jar_binks_was_a_trained_force_user/

I stumbled across that too. Was just rolling my eyes until he made the point about Yoda and the deliberate echoing of the original trilogy.

Then you realise that yes, Lucas is dumb enough to have a Gungan Sith Lord. -

Turns out the stupidity is spreading. Just went through the self-service checkout at Countdown to find the cover of the supposed NZ Journal of Natural Medicine staring straight at me - so unfortunately stupidity such as:

- 'Heart disease, is a lack of Vitamin C the true cause'

- 'Colloidal silver - better and so much safer than antibiotics'

... is spreading its "concentrated examples of quackery promotion*" into increasingly mainstream areas to scare the gullible.

* great quote from: http://sciblogs.co.nz/molecular-matters/2013/02/09/new-zealands-own-journal-of-natural-nuttiness/

I didn't dare click on the Journal website itself to get the exact text of the headlines - the fewer clicks they get the better.
-

From the comments in that link:

TR Jnr used to have major issues with ear infections, had 2 lots of grommets, adenoids out...someone suggested Colloidal silver drops to me, I read up on them, and figured I had nothing to lose (my dignity intact as no one saw me buy it) so got it, used it a few times when he was in tears over the pain, and you know what, it did nothing at all, and yet, when I got the anti-biotics, the change was almost instant.

TR Jnr is a bit of a drama-queen and I can get some placebos past him to soothe some things, but not his ears!
-

I am shocked , people have told mr hand on heart that the only reason colloidal silver isn't used more is because big pharma have managed to out market it. -

That journal was free right ? The only people making money out of sick people are big pharma and western medicine , woo merchants give the stuff away don't they?

If medicinal cannibis actually works the people trying to push need to look at steering away from using the fruitcakes they have been using to push their case in the media. There was the sad case of that teenage boy down South who was having seizures and his mother turned out to be some sort of natural health advocate and decided illegally to give her son medicinal cannibis because " a mother knows" . Sadly the boy died anyway.

A mate of mine I haven't seen for a while rang me in the weekend, hes thinking about giving up fishing because of the radiation in the water from the Fukushima power plant. http://www.conspiracyclub.co/2015/11/07/fukushima-radiation-on-fish/

Fantastic 10 minute interview with Radio NZ National's science correspondent this morning in which she outlines what constitutes scientific evidence - using great every day examples and basically debunks the latest health scare around cooking oils

The good stuff starts at 2:09 but basically she references the infographic below - with the examples.

We seem to quote an awful lot of expert opinion - the lowest form of scientific evidence.

Its well worth a listen for the everyday examples. From 8.22 she really climbs into the example of the cooking oil story - which appeared in the Telegraph last week.

Very familiar story from a lot of threads on The Fern - "published academic" - not a lot of published material and in a totally different field. Turns out the "research" came from an episode of Trust Me I'm a Doctor. Nevertheless it made international news and is now spawning all manner of comment in tin-foil helmet circles
