Ross has earned the right to hang up his own cap, especially after the captaincy debacle. Blundell will be replacing Watling shortly as he has announced his retirement, so there's no real point pushing Ross out.

There's also something special about having him hand a new debutant their NZ cap when Kane is unavailable. I know it's small potatoes, but that kind of thing is how team traditions and cultures are built.

Tbh , I think Ross is shot. All I hope from him now is a 20 cameo. We would be stronger with Young or Ravindra. I'm not demanding change, and the 2 I mentioned aren't banging the door down with Conway-like numbers. So, we roll on. But...

Na, that's not how international sport works.

When the new up and comer is a better player, and is showing all the signs of having the maturity to deal with those things that only experience can bring, then it's out with the old, in with the new. Nobody has a right to a spot. Not Ross, not Kane, and in a different sport, not Richie.

we're not the plucky underdogs of yore, we're about the best team in the world. Sentiment doesn't mean shit at the top.

My feeling is that the captaincy debacle, albeit nearly ten years ago, shows that NZC is more than capable of not giving Rossco the chance of a graceful managed exit if his form slides. Boult and Stead having the 'I'm available for Edgbaston', "no, he won't be available' back and forth in public is a sign that they can still blunder the basics...

I hope it's managed well, and he does deserve that chance given how close to retirement he genuinely is... but this is still NZC ๐Ÿ™‚

Just got SPark today and watching the 51 minute extended highlights. Well done Spark, good work.

Whoever commented on Conway's bat sound was spot on - it's weirdly metallic. Williamson's also sounds weird though... not sure what's up with that

I thought they all sounded a bit weird off the bat in that first session. On a couple of deliveries it almost sounded like the stumps had been hit.

Other than 20/20, our domestic cricket isn't really at a standard that lends itself to automatically believing that top performers translate to international cricket. If someone isn't performing at all or is injured, fine, but if the performance is more at a level of not great than terrible, it's hard to use that to justify dropping someone. Form is temporary, class is permanent and all that.

Perfect day for cricket, 3 wickets, and still only 86 overs bowled. Ridiculous. How about a little less unity and navel gazing and more cricket and the sport may be a bit more appealing to groups who have never been excluded. Fucking joke.

Near perfect conditions for batting today. But rain now expected in St John's Wood tomorrow.

The more I think about it the more I appreciate Nicholls innings. The English were buggered at the end and got nothing out of the new ball. Perfect batting to set the foundations of a big first innings - possibly the key indicator for test success.

Pitch looks good to bat on though

Ross is toward the end, not as good as his peak, but experience counts.

Hansen repeatedly told us that - until he abandoned it in 2019 - when he lost.

This cricket world championship match is going to be a lot about who keeps their nerve.

I'm backing Rossco. And, I'm backing our boys.

We've missed out before lads and we'll cope if we miss out again. Those Indians wo n't.

    Smack 'em!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Sign off with a hundred Ross - Go Boy!!!!

@chris-b there's a chapter of nz cricket folklore vacant for Ross to match Daniel Carter's swansong.

That would be both fitting and worthy๐Ÿ™‚
