That surprises me. How could any woman resist a guy with a powerwall?

<p>Of course. In fact, I've suggested they go with a lithium cell and waterproof USB charging port so I can feel less guilt about it. </p>

<p>I'll still have the shame.</p> -
<p>At the moment, I can sneak the battery recharging cradle in if the facilities guys aren't sniffing around, looking for untagged equipment.</p>

<p>But you raise an interesting point  if it becomes an internal battery, how do I get away with <em>that</em> in the testing lab?</p> -

<p>You can get POWERED fleshlights? I've only just moved on from 2 chicken breasts & a rubber band & now theres POWERED fleshlights?</p>

<p>We live in a magical time. I'm gonna need a wind turbine as well as my roof full of solar panels.</p> -
<p>For the nerdishly inclined: I got the API calls working to pull back every 15 minutes, to feed charts out of the database.</p>

<p>Just need to figure out interactive charts now - WordPress can be a bit of a skank when it comes to inserting your own code. Might have to write my own plugin...</p>

Thanks mate. Labour of love, hopefully a job if I get the right contacts.<br><br>
And climate research is right up your alley -
<p><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Nice one Nick. I have been investigating this in NZ for a while. </span></span></p>
<p> </p>
<p><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">I did a course in eco building, etc before we start our build in a few months. I had solar panels installed on our existing house a couple of years ago to find out the value, if I do it at the new place. If anyone is interested in NZ data (north of AKL) I can provide some more info. We get about 12 KW a day out of a 3.24 KWH system (average over the last year, not a very sunny one), so SYD numbers are way better, as would be expected. Peak in the last year was 24KW for a day.</span></span></p>
<p> </p>
<p><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Neither Tesla nor Panasonic have done many installs in NZ yet but it is definitely the answer when the power companies charge around 25c/ KW and pay 7c for any surplus power that we generate. </span></span></p>
<p> </p>
<p><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Tesla are being sold and marketed by Vector, this from them a couple of months ago:</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">"<span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">We have received your registration of interest in the Tesla batteries, thank you.</span></span></span></p>
<p class="" style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Helvetica Neue', 'Segoe UI', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif;font-size:13px;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><span>We will be in touch with you when we have confirmed timing on the release of the Tesla home battery and commercial storage solutions in New Zealand."</span></span></span></p>
<p class="" style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Helvetica Neue', 'Segoe UI', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif;font-size:13px;"> </p>
<p class="" style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Helvetica Neue', 'Segoe UI', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif;font-size:13px;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Panasonic have started a release in NZ through Solarcity, but are starting in AKL and I won't be able to get one until the end of the year.</span></span></p>
<p class="" style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Helvetica Neue', 'Segoe UI', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif;font-size:13px;"> </p>
<p class="" style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Helvetica Neue', 'Segoe UI', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif;font-size:13px;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">A couple of points to note:</span></span></p>
<p class="" style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Helvetica Neue', 'Segoe UI', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif;font-size:13px;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Panasonic a bit cheaper but not as stylish as Tesla.</span></span></p>
<p class="" style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Helvetica Neue', 'Segoe UI', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif;font-size:13px;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">As I understand it the Panasonic is slightly bigger at around 8kw, but also in dimensions</span></span></p>
<p class="" style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Helvetica Neue', 'Segoe UI', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif;font-size:13px;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">The panasonic guy told me on the phone that the Tesla will only take it's own inverter, so if you already have PV panels you need to buy the Tesla inverter. Panasonic can be retrofitted.</span></span></p>
<p class="" style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Helvetica Neue', 'Segoe UI', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif;font-size:13px;"> </p>
<p class="" style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Helvetica Neue', 'Segoe UI', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif;font-size:13px;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Great thing about the batteries is that you don't need to change the way you do things as much. We try to only run large appliances on sunny days, etc but with the battery you are using your own stored power, so not such an issue.</span></span></p>
<p class="" style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:'Helvetica Neue', 'Segoe UI', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif;font-size:13px;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Hopefully I can get one soon.</span></span></p> -
<p>My neighbour is getting some panels installed, but said he was told he should wait for next gen batteries which can be retro-fitted.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Unfortunately cost still makes it prohibitive here IMO, and my understanding is alot of the panels used in NZ right now are likely to need replacing before they have paid you back fro them.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Are you building again Snowy? I thought you had already built! Where exactly are you?</p> -
<p>Not done the original build yet TR, have done 4 reno jobs while this has been waiting to happen. Will be doing 2 builds on same block now - going to live in small one while the other is going up. It is a big project!</p>
<p> </p>
<p>We are currently an hour north of AKL. The new build site is up from Leigh overlooking Pakiri.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>As for solar cost and ROI in NZ, my panels are guaranteed for 20 years and I have an ROI of around 15 based on last year. Not great but still worth doing, especially if I can get a battery.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Interesting comment about retrofitting. Pretty sure the Panasonic already can be, maybe that is the change in the new Tesla...</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Of course if I could buy a Tesla car in NZ I could use that as a battery anyway, but they aren't here yet.</p> -
<p>I dunno which brands he was talking bout being retrofitted, and this was the solar panel guy telling him.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>15 years, yikes! GUess I'll just have to keep buying Lotto :)</p>
<p> </p>
<p>I expect the Tesla car would be much more efficient than the TVR (or was it something else, trying to remember) you had :)</p>
