Funny article. I drive 100% of the time unless drunk when my wife and I are in the car, and I'll be fucked if that's changing any time soon especially for the long hauls. She also prefers to be in the passenger seat as that allows her precious social media time on her phone.

I think there are more men that enjoy driving than there are women, doubt that's going to change

The whole thing will be a moot point soon when Elon rolls out his driverless cars to the public anyway,

I pretty much have a driverless car already. It's the wife's car. I really wish she'd just pay a bit more attention.

My mother hit a tree with her car leaving the panelbeaters when I was a kid. To this day describes herself as a “very good driver”. Everyone I’ve ever heard call themselves a very good driver is usually not.

Fucken word to this post. I'll freely admit to being careless and inconsiderate at times. I'm human. I make mistakes. I have a fuck ton of evidence pointing out mates who claim they are brilliant making bad mistakes, best one was one who went through a roundabout with a trailer and didn't give way to his right, but, you know the honking and abuse he received was "the other guys fault"

Asians and Indians are fucken bad drivers though. Especially the women.

@no-quarter I think historically, and statistically, males did drive more often when going on family trips, which has also contributed to the males more likely to have accidents than females (add in the show off factor too and well, perfect storm)

I remember as a young boy in the late 70s and early 80s, we went on family outings, dad drove, even after he'd had a few beers and mum hadnt had anything to drink.

my bro and I were given a bottle of coke and a bag of burger rings or chips and sent out to the old Escort Van to go and read or fight until we got tired and needed to sleep

I always drive irrespective of whose car it is because I am a terrible passenger

Not that I am a fantastic driver but having been involved in seven write offs by 25 and having been either the passenger and / or stationary for every one makes you reluctant to give over control.

As someone from the Asian demographic I would tend to agree that they are fucking hopeless drivers (I have influenced CF Jnr because he knows the bad drivers are either Indian, Asian, women or old people LOL). There are lots of shit caucasian drivers too, in general I find the asian/indians to be incompetent whereas many of the euros are just plain rude and inconsiderate

@canefan You hear horrible stories (after a fatal accident) about Chinese arriving in NZ and never have driven on an open road, i.e., they learnt to "drive" on a simulator.

I'm a firm believer that driving is partially observed behaviour. If you've been brought up by a couple of generations of drivers, you observe and adopt. However, being the first generation to progress from riding a cow or herding goats makes it entirely a new phenomenon.

That being said, despite watching Chinese create five lanes of traffic in Shanghai where three lanes were clearly painted on the road, I saw a surprisingly small amount of accidents. Perhaps they export their shit drivers?

Oh the memories, we only got raspberry and lemonade and a packet of chippies . My mother denies this ever happened now .
I shudder to think about her or dad driving the hq statesman home over the castlepoint road afterwards .

that was my impression too. The roads there look like carnage, but there are so few accidents. They have the ability to take small gaps, use their horn to make sure everyone knows they are there, and don't get pissed because someone has the audacity to merge in front of them.

Maybe the fact that most Australasian drivers are aggressive dicks is what puts them off?

This. So much this. There is a sizable proportion of drivers on the road in NZ that are aggressive as fuck. You see ridiculous shit nearly every day. One of my biggest annoyances is when I indicate to change lanes, and the fuckwit behind me sees that and decides to slam on the accelerator, change into the same lane I am moving into and try and overtake me. Putting himself right into my blind-spot. That seems to happen far more than I would expect given how absolutely braindead it is.

I've heard in China they tend to drive a lot slower, so struggle to adapt in NZ where going about 10% above whatever the speed-limit is the norm.

i don't know about slower, some drive at unreal speeds. But yea, i think generally it was a bit slower?

Merging in Australasia is the worst part of driving. Fuckwits who simply won't let people in, slowing down two lanes of traffic. Fuckwits like the ones you describe. Fuckwits who don't look.

Different conditions. I've been to China a couple of times and there are shitloads of cars, strangely I saw no accidents.

@mariner4life fair enough, I don't know the first thing about China so have no idea - might have been someone referring to a particular part of it given how massive that country is.

Another thing they (and a lot of people from overseas) might struggle with in NZ is 100km speed limits on narrow two lane roads.

That does scare the shit out of me to be honest, there’s only a strip of paint between you and someone travelling at 100 kmh towards you could be distracted by dropping hot pie gravy onto their lap, or adjusting their stereo or arguing with their partner or think “ they are a very good driver”.

If the stereotype about Asian/Indian drivers was actually true no one would ever get out of Sydney airport by road due to all the crashes because ever cab /Uber/Ola driver is Asian/Indian (or Arab).

Yeah, that seems to be a SH thing, NZ is the same, whereas in Europe there's no issues with merging.
