I need to elborate that I don't really think we should give Labour three more years without an election. I was more suggesting that Cindy will be our prime minister after this election one way or another.
You could make some coin - Betfair had Labour at $1.17-$1.20 to supply the next PM. Could drop a lazy few thousand on there ... for some folk could be nice loss insurance

But if NZF or the commies fall short would that only leave two parties in Parliament? (although are National setting up ACT to get Epsom? ) So one should be able to govern alone.
if Greens miss out, it'll probably be because Labour are polling so strongly. So that woudl be a straight shootout between a strongly polling Labour, and Nat+Act. Can't see Labour being lower, but goddamn 2 weeks has been an eternity in Politics this year, and we're still 60 days away...

I think we're all being a bit harsh on Falloon. After all, you have to give him some credit for all this. He was only holding the biosecurity portfolio for National for a couple of months, yet in that short space of time, he was able to unearth a massive pest.

@canefan he has been playing the politics game particularly well in the past couple of months too, timing his run as usual...
Gotta hand it to him, slippery and cunning, the ultimate survivor

media seem to be keener on this story than the Labour sex abuse one...
-
@taniwharugby this is higher profile since it involves an actual MP and apparently a long period of time as a predator, rather than a douchebag at a camp.
-
Comparing What this dick did to what another dick did just misses the point. They are dicks.
What makes Fallon an extra dick is a lack of apology to those he sent stuff to, lying in an attempted coverup and then playing a mental health card for sympathy.
What kind of “vetting” do these politicians get before being allowed to stand or added to a list? Looks like fuck all. -
@Godder said in NZ Politics:
Our system doesn't really involve a lot of hurdles - parties are more discerning than they once were, but the principle of democracy basically makes it a problem for voters as much as anything.
Sure, anyone can stand but I would have thought that parties would vet better in their own interests. At least enough to weed out creeps that will cause embarrassment later.

Tough with legacy MPs, but Labour do actually do some vetting and have a good mentoring system, and I assume National have something similar. The problem they both have is electorate MPs because both Labour and National run a local democratic candidate selection process so have fuck all say over those nominations.

@Godder I thought the other one involved physical assault as opposed to inappropriate images being texted, which I'd expect to be treated a bit more serious.
And they were told to just avoid the part of the building where he worked to avoid further assaults.
Advise from the Prime Ministers office no less.

I don't think Judith gets enough credit for acting swiftly. Jacinda hasn't copped nearly enough heat for failing to deal with any of her misstepping MPs (Cullen, Clark) or the sexual predator in their midst
-
Winnie under the cosh now for using his office to get two (rich) 'friends' a tax payer funded junket to Scott Base. Even though he was told it would probably mean cutting back on the Antarctic science programme.
Ultimately it didn't but yet another example of Winnie's patronage issues. He will wriggle out of it of course he always does. He's the master of slinging about unfounded shit in the hope some sticks which presumably is how he's so adroit at making the merde miss himself

And now maybe there will be some Labour bloodletting? This may be a test of action for Jacinda

And a good litmus test for the impartiality of the media. You like scandals, here's one for your team.
Might make a few other MPs think twice before passing these over to friendly journalists.
