IMO It'd be bloody great if someone started a separate topic about Jacinda's insincerity or how white males are the real victims and all the other politicisation of this thread
What a stupid post.
This topic has been politicised by the media and politicians... and as for white males? You are trying to hard. -

I’d even go so far as to say exploited.
Blood was rushing to Matthew Hooton’s brain this morning as he excitedly typed out a commentary in the Herald imploring Jacinda to call a snap election because she’ll never be more popular. He wants her to strike while the iron is still hot.
Sadly reminds me of the gleeful PNAC warmongers who got their “catalyzing event” when planes slammed into skyscrapers.
Exploiting a political advantage out of a tragedy is cynical, but not unprecedented.

Hooten is always very interesting to read for his insights, but he sometimes over-eggs his resulting conclusions. A snap election being a classic...
Agreed, he also likes to stir too. Now that he's made the suggestion some reporter is likely to ask Ardern and stir the pot even more.

So the twat now has legal council, I thought he didnt want it...
So did these Lawyers go to him offering thier service...or did he see sense to take a proper defence?
Now they are looking at his mental state...even if deemed not in a sound mind, surely he will still be incarcerated for the duration of his worthless life.

Judge said it is routine. Either way he's never getting out. I'm happy for him to get professional representation. No grounds for appeal and I'm sure we won't see any Ewen MacDonald style histrionics from the defence
-
@taniwharugby I'd heard that it's offered as a matter of course. But that the defendant didn't need to accept. Not 100% on that though. As long as we follow due process and put that fucker away for forever.
-
@Paekakboyz oh yeah, he is (legally) entitled to a defence (legal aid cos he cant pay) but I thought he had opted to defend himself...where people were worried he would try to use as a platform to grandstand further.
So in a way it is good he has a defence, but jeez, even with the rights to legal defence, defending a fucker like him cant have been an easy decision...?

My wife (lawyer) said he's representing himself but is entitled to legal counsel to ensure he understands how things work. I.E. legal assistance, which is normal as people who represent themselves don't have a clue how things actually work.
Unless he's completely changed his mind on that?

Yup, it’s all process stuff, which I suspect he’s going to be clueless about. My guess is he’ll try to use his time to sermonize, there’ll be numerous objections, warnings and he’ll be gagged and held in contempt.
Ofcourse, just because he’s evil and a homicidal maniac doesn’t necessarily mean he’s stupid. One presumes he has access to legal books and might be able to prepare and mount something of a defence. But he’ll be on very thin ice and judge will throw the book at him the second he strays outside his boundries.
-
@No-Quarter they said on tv1 he has legal representation and read a quoted section from the Lawyers representing citing his right to representation in the civilised world or something...expect they are making the statement as plenty will be unable to understand how they can represent him...but tv1 could well be wrong too haha
-
@taniwharugby fair enough, was probably told how much work is involved representing himself so changed his mind.
Also, the lawyer that does represent him is doing a hell of a service to society. Without the right to a fair trial everything falls over very quickly, it's one of the most important things that separates countries like NZ from shithole countries where basic human rights do not exist. I would hope people appreciate that instead of slagging him/her off.

The biggest concern with this piece of shit is he’s likely to cause a heap of legal troubles (and waste a lot of resources money and court time)
The guy will have nothing to lose, he must know he’s going to spend the rest of his life behind bars.
There’s already reports he’s complaining about his incarceration conditions. How hard will he try to use that as leverage.
Can see him taking corrections to court like that pedo Phillip Smith has been, botching about his wig and products.
No doubt there will be plenty of lawyers out there seeing this guy as a chance to enhance their careers. -

The guy holding the phone came across as a bit of an idiot to me. No wonder he is on some sort of 'list'. It was pretty obvious he was more interested in ranting than having a conversation.
No problem with them carrying a gun. It's not only about the chat with the guy, it's also about being able to respond adequately should something happen during their shift. Imagine the shit storm if something happened and police were in the vicinity, but did not have the tools to respond properly.
As for the cop not wanting to be recorded, who knows? Cops are human too and maybe he didn't fancy being all over the internet. It's also pretty bloody hard to speak to somebody when they are holding a phone up in your face. You know straight away the odds are it's going to hard to rationalise with them.
-
@Crazy-Horse Was hoping you'd respond. I was under the impression that police in NZ do not routinely carry firearms (normally in the vehicle). If this wasn't routine and there was enough of a risk to warrant a weapon that there would at least be an arrest.
I've had a look through the guy in question's facebook, a bit ranty but nothing outrageous (at least publicly). I don't begrudge him videoing the situation considering his negative opinion of some of the governments recent decisions along with similar footage coming from the UK. It would have been good if the officer had discussed the situation at least a little on camera, the end result here is an already concerned guy has now moved well into the paranoid camp.

I've noticed a lot of cops carrying handguns around of late. Maybe this is quietly becoming a standard thing?
-
@Rembrandt I think there is and that would be why more cops are carrying.
Agree that the cop could have engaged more even with the guy recording him. It looks like police are hiding something otherwise.
