Injuries reported as White Island volcano erupts in the Bay of Plenty
Up to 100 people may have been on White Island when it erupted, spewing plumes of smoke into the air on Monday.
The TECT Rescue helicopter and the Waikato Westpac Helicopter have been dispatched to White Island and are responding to initial reports of 100 people on the island at the time of the eruption.
A St John spokesperson said they had reports of up to 20 people injured after the island in Bay of Plenty erupted, sending massive plumes of steam and debris into the air.

Isnt there generally more activity before an eruption? Seems unusual that there was no warning . Obviously I'm far from an expert though.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/118061703/in-pictures-white-island-eruptionListening to the experts talking at the moment. All the monitoring can do is guess at risk levels. You can still get a 'small' eruption out of the blue and/or many times the rating is increased because they notice activity it comes to nothing.
This seems to have caught everyone out.It is a risk you take when visiting a volcano I guess, Hell, I spend a bit of time on Ruapehu and the Whakapapa side is built right on the lahar path. Everyone knows that and there are warnings, sirens and drills. Won't stop me going and won't stop something happening one day.

Very sad to hear, I went there as a kid and it was an amazing experience. Definitely a risk involved visiting it as it is a live volcano, but still incredibly bad luck.

24 Aussies might have been on the island

I always find it weird how initially boats and helis can get there to rescue people. People react to help. Once it's official is now to dangerous to too there.
Not sure what's weird about that.
I'm fortunately enough to have never had to make this decision (knock on wood!), but surely if you are there, you are there, and instincts take over. Firstly, to look after yourself, secondly to help out others. You have to make a judgement call on if your boat/heli goes back to pick up people who need to be evacuated. If you realistically think you can do it without hurting yourself, why wouldn't you?

I think he means if regular Joe's can do it why can't the authorities?

Look at the ash covering the beach, and that helicopter is smashed
This image, apparently taken just prior to the eruption seems to show people at the crater just before the eruption (red arrow). Considering the amount of debris that was probably being thrown into the air, that would not have been a good place to be

Because as an individual you can choose to risk your own life.
As an authority you cannot volunteer someone else to lose theirs.

That shift in risk assessment since the first responders got people out is sadly a good one. If no one is still alive on the Island to save...
Police update
The Police Eagle helicopter, rescue helicopter, and NZDF aircraft have undertaken a number of aerial reconnaissance flights over the island since the eruption, but no signs of life have been seen at any point, police say.
"Police believe that anyone who could have been taken from the island alive was rescued at the time of the evacuation.
"Based on the information we have, we do not believe there are any survivors on the island.
"Police is working urgently to confirm the exact number of those who have died, further to the five confirmed deceased already."

The police say eight people are still missing on White Island / Whakaari.
Five people have been confirmed dead and 31 are injured and are being treated in hospital.
Among the missing are Australians, Americans, Chinese, British and Malaysians, as well as New Zealanders.
