Nutbrown has the makings of a good ref, he just gets inconsistent seemingly because he tries to adjust his own decision making during a game.
In the first half he made two overly strict calls on the ball not being out of a ruck even though it had popped out into clear air then later in the game he was allowing players to attack the halfback when he had barely touched the ball.
It was like he realised he was being too strict then adjusted back too far.
Apart from that though, I don't mind him. He comes across less arrogant than Jackson.

I was a bit surprised Ngatai wasn't wearing headgear. Not sure how effective the headgear might be in cushioning the blow of a hard knock, but thought every little bit of help might be useful. The headgear may be a bit uncomfortable perhaps, and restrict peripheral vision?

Headgear does absolutely nothing for concussion. Concussion comes from your brain moving inside your head and smacking against the inside of your skull. That's why whiplash type knocks are the worst for symptoms occurring e.g. Ben Smith against the Chiefs.

Has Ngatai always had that facial tick? Or is that concussion symptoms showing up again?

A tick is not a symptom of concussion. Just leave it at that. Else there is the conspiracy theories thread in off-topic.

Oh right. How very awful of me. Ever so sorry sir.

Hah! Heaven forbid we guess at things including players health on this ever so accurate sporting forum. Especially in the form of a query.

Speaking of which, too many NZ players are still not wearing their mouthguards, which is important in the prevention of concussion. This seems to be more noticeable for Polynesian players.

NZR made a big song and dance about this a year or two back but seem to have backed off. The refs should ensure all players are wearing mouthguards, and if they aren't the players can't play - simple. ACC would also be perfectly within their rights to deny a rugby player free medical care if they deliberately choose not to wear one.

@Bovidae at what level isn't mouth guards compulsory?

These guys should be wearing them if only to set a good example for kids who have to wear them, and aren't mouth guards more likely to reduce the chance of concussion than head gear

@taniwharugby I think mouthguards are compulsory at all levels but as I mentioned a lot of NZ Super rugby players don't wear them.

Headgear only protects your ears and head from scratches/sprig marks, not concussion. Mouthguards are the main preventative safety measure against concussion.

    True.

My understanding is that headgear is actually quite bad for concussion, because it tends to increase the pressure effect of any swelling.

Boxing is in the process of banning headgear. And that's the boxing type that actually has enough padding to reduce the force of a blow, which the rugby ones don't really.

Mouthguards don't do anything close to preventing concussion. The ACC are due to launch a campaign educating against this myth but need to tread carefully as they still want people wearing moutguards to prevent against dental injuries.

They are a cluster fuck of the highest order. Garnered some inside info today which I won't divulge. But, things are even worse than I thought.

One thing I will say is that an ex-league, ex-AFL, recent coke snorter is held in very high regard. That tells you something.

For all the early reputation of being super-skilled he really never lived up to much did he?

The guy has nice vision for passing and that's about it. Especially when every good thing he creates is undone by another 2 pieces of shit.

It's been so long since that was seen I forgot about it.

Compared to backs like BB, JB, DMac he's just an average Joe
